Company G, 93rd New York Infantry Regiment, August 1863
Etwas zu groß. ZITAT This particular company found themselves in a particularly tight spot less than a year later at the Battle of the Wilderness. The Captain on the left of the photo, William Beekman, aged 22, was severely wounded in the stomach and was discharged from service. The 1st Lieutenant with the Amish beard laying on the ground, Francis Bailey aged 26, was hit in the chest and killed. The 2nd Lieutenant, legs crossed, with the sword against his leg, Robert Gray, aged 20, was shot in the head and killed instantly during the fighting. An excerpt from a soldier recalling his death: "One of the first to fall was Lieut. Gray, of Co. G. the ball passing directly through his head. He fell to the ground lifeless without a murmur. (He was slightly wounded by a spent ball a moment before, and after going to the rear a few steps, and finding the wound a trifling one, he returned.)"
