Kenya troops move into Somalia to pursue kidnappers
Kenya has sent troops into Somalia in a bid to pursue militants it suspects of carrying out a spate of kidnappings.

Government spokesman Alfred Matua said troops were pursuing Somali al-Shabab militants across the border.

Two Spanish aid workers were abducted from Kenya's sprawling Dadaab refugee camp on Thursday.

A British woman and a French woman have been kidnapped from remote beach resorts over the past month, dealing a major blow to Kenya's tourism industry.

An eyewitness told the BBC he had seen about 25 armoured vehicles full of Kenyan soldiers passing through the Somali town of Dhobley. Tanks were also seen.

The BBC's Will Ross, in Nairobi, says there are reports that Kenyan military helicopters have been carrying out raids in Somalia.

In response, al-Shabab - the radical Islamist insurgent group in Somalia - tried to raise the alarm in the areas it controls, the Associated Press news agency reports.

Residents in the town of Qoqani said militants were going into people's homes and forcibly recruiting new fighters, according to the AP.
Abdirahman Omar Osman, spokesman for Somalia's UN-backed government, said Kenya is "providing logistical and moral support" but insisted that Somali forces are the ones "battling the Shabab on the ground".

Kenyan Defence Minister Yusuf Mohammed Haji said: "If you are attacked by an enemy, you are allowed to pursue that enemy until where you get him. We will force them far away from our border."

Our correspondent says some Kenyans fear their country could become a target for more al-Shabab attacks if it becomes more deeply embroiled in Somalia's conflict.

Kenya's Internal Security Minister, George Saitoti, announced on Saturday that forces would be sent to fight al-Qaeda inside Somalia.

The move comes days after the two aid workers with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), named as Blanca Thiebaut and Montserrat Serra, were taken from Dadaab, the world's largest refugee camp.

Just 80km (50 miles) from the Somali border, Dadaab currently houses nearly half a million refugees, most of whom are Somalis who have fled conflict and famine.

A Kenyan driver working for the Care charity was abducted from Dadaab on 21 September.

Last month, 56-year-old Briton Judith Tebbutt was kidnapped - and her husband David killed - by gunmen while the couple were on holiday in a remote Kenyan resort at Kiwayu.

On 1 October, a 66-year-old French woman was seized by an armed gang on Kenya's northern resort island of Manda and taken to Somalia.

The UK Foreign Office has advised against all but essential travel to the Kenyan coast near the Somali border.

Can General Linder’s Special Operations Forces Stop the Next Terrorist Threat?

By ELIZA GRISWOLD - JUNE 13, 2014

On a searing morning this spring, Brig. Gen. James B. Linder leaned against the red-webbing seats of a C-130 as it flew over the Sahara. On his camouflaged knee, he balanced two dog-eared Moleskine notebooks and a map of Africa. Linder, who is in his early 50s, commands the United States Special Operations forces in Africa. He was on his way to visit a detachment of 12 Army Green Berets training with African troops to fight Al Qaeda and its affiliates in Niger. Through the plane’s scratched plexiglass portholes, dunes crested like waves in an ocean of sand, and hot blasts of wind buffeted the fuselage. An hour’s flight to the south, his team of Special Forces was deployed along the Nigerian border, where the militant group Boko Haram was targeting children in its bid to establish an Islamic state.

“My job is to look at Africa and see where the threat to the United States is,” Linder said as he unfolded his map and traced circles around the territories where he knew extremist groups were operating. “I see Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the Libyan problem set, Al Shabab in Somalia, Boko Haram in Nigeria, Ansar al-Sharia in Tunisia, Benghazi and Darna.”

The United States Africa Command, known as Africom, was established in 2007 but stepped up its operations after the Arab Spring uprisings in 2011, when the overthrow of dictatorships from Tunisia to Libya to Egypt allowed militants and criminal networks to spread. In 2012, Al Qaeda and its affiliates seized control of Northern Mali and held a territory the size of Texas for nearly a year. With American support, French and Chadian forces managed to dislodge them, but they are still active in the region. In 2013, some 30 militants took over the Tigantourine gas facility in Algeria and killed 39 hostages. That same year, Somali militants raided the Westgate shopping center in Kenya’s capital, leaving 67 dead.

These attacks underscore how the threat to U.S. interests has shifted from Iraq and Afghanistan to Yemen and Africa. Linder arrived at Africom just after the storming of the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012. “Instability in Libya is causing a lot of the instability in West Africa,” he said. But it isn’t simply a matter of dots on a map. “I see the enemy, and then I look for connective tissue.” With his index finger, he traced how the conflicts in Libya and Syria are flooding Africa to the south with weapons and fighters. “Foreign fighters coming out of Syria are a serious problem,” he added. As terrorists move around and try to build networks between cells and like-minded organizations, Linder looks to break them apart.

“We have a real global threat,” Linder continued. “The problems in Africa are going to land on our doorstep if we’re not careful.” Linder opened one of his battered notebooks and riffled through a stack of graphs and statistics he clipped from The Economist and other publications. He pulled out an international flight schedule. “From Nigeria to the United States, there are eight direct flights a week.” Boko Haram hadn’t yet succeeded in wreaking much havoc beyond Nigeria’s borders, but had signaled their intent to do so. In July 2010, their leader, Abubakar Shekau, declared the group’s allegiance to Al Qaeda and said to America: “Jihad has just begun.”

Kenya attack: Mpeketoni near Lamu hit by 'Islamist' raid

At least 48 people have died after suspected Islamist militants attacked hotels and a police station in a Kenyan coastal town, officials say.

Witnesses in Mpeketoni said gun battles went on for several hours and reported seeing buildings set on fire.

The town is on the mainland near Lamu island, a well-known tourist resort.

Kenya has suffered numerous militant attacks since 2011 when its forces entered neighbouring Somalia to combat al-Shabab fighters.

This is the most deadly attack in Kenya since at least 67 people were killed during a siege at Nairobi's Westgate shopping centre last September.

The BBC's Yusuf Dayo in Nairobi says the attack started at 20:30 local time (17:30 GMT) on Sunday as locals were watching a football World Cup match on television.

Local residents told the BBC the gunmen hijacked a van and used it to attack various locations across Mpeketoni, which tourists pass through before crossing to Lamu.

Witnesses said gunmen, who had their faces covered, threw explosives into the local police station before entering and stealing weapons.
Kenya has been on high alert recently following warnings that al-Shabab was planning more attacks.

The US and UK have issued advisories to their nationals to keep away from the Kenyan coast.

Sunday's attack comes days after the UK government closed its consulate in the port city of Mombasa, citing heightened security threats.

District deputy commissioner Benson Maisori said several buildings in Mpeketoni had been burned down, including hotels, restaurants, banks and government offices, AFP news agency reports.

Bozo Jenje, a journalist in Mombasa, told the BBC that residents had reported seeing bodies scattered across roads in the town.

Local resident John Waweru, 28, said two of his brothers had been killed.

"The attackers came in around 9pm. I heard them shouting in Somali as they fired around. I lost two of my brothers, and I escaped. I ran and locked up myself in a house," he told AFP.

Local police chief Hamaton Mwaliko told Reuters news agency the gunmen had also raided the police station.

"We understand the attackers have already fled but our officers are pursuing them," Mr Mwaliko added.

Army spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir said surveillance aircraft had been dispatched to the region to help with the security operation.

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has summoned Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku and police chief David Kimaiyo to discuss the security situation, the BBC's Caroline Karobia reports from Nairobi.

Questions are being asked about how gunmen could raid a town for about five hours without an adequate response from the security forces, she says.

Nearby Lamu island is a popular tourist destination with ancient architecture that is listed as a Unesco World Heritage site.

UK national Judith Tebbutt was kidnapped by gunmen in September 2011 from the remote resort of Kiwayu, north-east of Lamu island.

The gang also shot dead her 58-year-old husband, David Tebbutt.

Mrs Tebbutt was released six months later after a ransom was paid to pirates holding her captive in Somalia.

For the past three weeks, Green Berets, along with British, French and Canadian special operators, had been training 139 elite troops from Niger, Nigeria and Chad. [...] Morning after morning, under the pewter sun, the operators instructed the African soldiers in a mix of English, French and Arabic — “Yalla!” — on how to shoulder their weapons and aggressively approach an enemy camp. “Come on, ladies! There ain’t no dragons in there!” one Green Beret barked at a group of Chadians who didn’t understand him. Another said, “If you aim your weapon like that, you’re going to shoot your friends.” The air crackled with blank automatic rounds as African soldiers rushed over the ridge. Someone threw a grenade simulator in the wrong direction; flames shot out of the dry brush.
A dozen traditional leaders in a rainbow of flowing robes and fezzes approached Linder. [...] “Are you going to take us hostage?” a tribal leader of 65,000 people joked to Linder in French. The general waited as Melanie Zimmerman, his foreign-policy adviser, who was wearing combat boots she ordered from Amazon, translated. “Boko Haram is hiding here,” the elder went on. “No one wants them.” [...]
One evening, over a dinner of tamales and chocolate milk in the makeshift mess hall, a group of Nigerian commandos swapped stories about encounters with Boko Haram. They belonged to the Special Boat Service, which shares its name with the British version of the Navy SEALs. These men were trained by the British and the Americans to help safeguard oil in Nigeria’s watery south. Now, however, they were stationed in the country’s sere north to fight Boko Haram. Other than the occasional flash flood, there was no water, and their maritime tactics were useless. Bawa Muse, a rangy guy in a black V-neck T-shirt, boasted that he had survived about 20 gun battles with Boko Haram, including an ambush from which he ran away. In Diffa, he learned that the best tactic to use in an ambush was to fight through it. [...]

RAF Tornados sent to West Africa
Tim Ripley, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
04 September 2014

RAF Panavia Tornado GR.4 combat aircraft have deployed to West Africa to join multinational operations against the radical Islamist group Boko Haram.

The aircraft from 2 (Army Co-operation) Squadron left RAF Marham in Norfolk during the last week of August and have since begun operating over Nigeria from the French airbase at N'Djamena in Chad, according to defence sources in London.

It is understood that the Tornados will be used in the intelligence, surveillance, targeting, acquisition and reconaissance (ISTAR) role using their Rafael Litening 3 advanced targeting pods or the Goodrich Raptor photographic reconnonaissance pod.

The UK government contributed the Tornados to help the hunt for the Nigerian schoolgirls who were abducted by Bokum Haram in May.

AFRICOM Chief: 'Huge' Effort Needed To Fight Boko Haram

Agence France-Presse 7:21 p.m. EST January 27, 2015

WASHINGTON — Turning the tide against Boko Haram will require a "huge" international effort, a top US military commander warned on Tuesday, taking a swipe at Nigeria's response to the emboldened extremists.

Relations between the Nigerian and US militaries have been strained with Nigeria canceling training by US advisers of a unit that was supposed to fight the militants, who have captured towns and villages in the country's northeast and vowed to create a hardline Islamic state.

The conflict has left more than 13,000 people dead and one million homeless.

Gen. David Rodriguez, head of US Africa Command, said the Islamists' gains on the battlefield are cause for concern and "the number of people displaced is just staggering."

"I think it's going to take a huge international and multinational effort there to change a trajectory that continues to go in the wrong direction," Rodriguez said at an event organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.

"The Nigerian leadership and Nigerian military are going to have to really improve their capacities to be able to handle that."

Rodriguez said the Nigerian military's response "was not working very effectively and actually in some places made it worse."

He added: "I hope that they let us help more and more."

Nigeria's ambassador to the United States, Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye, complained in November that his country is "not satisfied" with US support for the struggle against Boko Haram and that Washington has blocked the sale of some military hardware over human rights concerns.

In a visit Sunday to Lagos, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Washington was "prepared to do more" to help Nigeria counter Boko Haram.

Nigeria has the largest army in west Africa but has come under criticism at home and abroad for failing to stop the advance of Boko Haram.

The United States was working with Nigeria to build a comprehensive strategy "across the board, not just military," that encompassed education, economic development and health care to address the needs of the population in the north, the four-star general said.

Another "big focus" was to bolster the country's intelligence gathering, added Rodriguez.

[Nigerian] Army Officers Write Open Letter To Jonathan, Urge Obama, Ban-ki Moon To Intervene In Anti-Terror War

The officers who authored the letter said they were initially reluctant to air their grievances in the open in order not to boost the morale of insurgents, but added that troops fighting Boko Haram, a terrorist Islamist sect that has seized a significant swathe of territory in Nigeria’s northeast zone, have been equipped poorly. In addition, the officers accused Mr. Jonathan of condoning the looting of funds meant for the war against the insurgents. They specifically alleged that “Chief of Training and Operations, Major General J.A.H. Ewansiha” was a major looter of security funds. In addition, the letter stated that it was well known that Mr. Jonathan’s ADC had illicitly acquired stupendous wealth that has enabled him to buy up expensive homes in Nigeria and abroad.

by Sahara Reporters Jan 30, 2015

A group of Nigerian Army officers involved in operations against Islamist insurgents tagged “Operation Zaman Lafiya” have written an open letter detailing a series of problems bedeviling their military operations. In addition, the officers called on President Goodluck Jonathan to investigate massive looting of funds meant for military operations. They also urged President Barack Obama of the United States and United Nations Secretary General Banki Moon to put pressure on Mr. Jonathan to engage in fighting a more focused war on Islamist terror.

SaharaReporters obtained the open letter titled “State of Operations In The North East As Observed By Some Concerned Officers.” The open letter began, “We the concerned officers participating in the North East Operation Zaman Lafiya do resolve to write this letter for the following reasons: a. to save our country Nigeria; b. to stop the bloodshed of innocent officers, soldiers and civilians in the North East; c. to appeal to the President of the United State[s] of America Mr. Barack Obama, United Nation Secretary General Mr. Banki Moon and other world leaders to as quickly as important intervene and urge President Goodluck Jonathan to do the needful in addressing the issue of insurgency in Nigeria especially in the North East.”

The letter further alleged that top military officials had intimidated an officer who wrote a letter to the president to deny authorship of the document which exposed massive corruption in the anti-terror operations.

Below is the full text of the letter:

STATE OF OPERATIONS IN THE NORTH EAST AS OBSERVED BY SOME CONCERNED OFFICERS

1. We the concerned officers participating in the North East Operation Zaman Lafiya do resolve to write this letter for the following reasons:

a. To save our country Nigeria.

b. To stop the bloodshed of innocent officers, soldiers and civilians in the North East.

c. To appeal to the president of the United State of America Mr. Barrack Obama, United Nation Secretary General Mr. Banki Moon and other world leaders to as quickly as important to intervene and urge President Goodluck Jonathan to do the needful in addressing the issue of insurgency in Nigeria especially in the North East.

2. As members of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is our responsibility to defend our country Nigeria which we are ever ready to do so as the call arises. But firstly, the civil authority has the first responsibility to equip us effectively to enable us to carry out such task. This is common practice all over the world. As professional officers and soldiers, we did not want to go public with details of our frustrations concerning this operation because doing so will boast the moral[e] of our enemy. But the persistent neglect of our plight made us to do otherwise.

3. It is well known fact that of recent, a commanding officer from this theater of operation wrote a letter to our President intimating him of a few out of numerous problems affecting us in this operation which we believe Mr. President will address. It appears Mr. President has chosen to ignore it because none of his relations are among us. In this 21st century, how can an accused [be] a judge of his own case? That letter clearly exposed the rot within the military authorities concerning this operation. This is because, the Army authority that was accused of poor administration in that letter, set up a kangaroo investigation that harass[ed], intimidate[d], and forced the officer to deny the authorship of the letter.

4. We authoritatively learned that, the Army authority succeeded in forcing the officer to deny the letter through the Provost Marshal (Army) who happen[ed] to be of the same tribe with the officer concern[ed]. For President Goodluck Jonathan to ignore such kind of allegation made us to believe the rumor going round that he has a hand or knowledge in the so-called Boko Haram. We are also aware of how the funds meant for these operations are being looted through the office of the Chief of Training and Operations, Major General J.A.H. Ewansiha. Despite our strong [belief] in democracy, we condemn a democratic government that condones corruption, especially in its military. The President is reported to always turn a blind eye to issues of corruption. For instance, the ADC to Mr.President is presently one of the richest officers in the army. He owns properties in choice places all over the country and even abroad. We are going to make public details of his wealth and assets at the appropriate time.

5. We are appealing to all well meaning Nigerians and leaders of International Community to please speak out with loud voice in [order] to make President Jonathan to constitute an independent high-powered committee to investigate the content of that letter written to him by the commanding officer. Should this request be ignored, the resultant consequence could only be imagined.

6. We stand bold to state that we are speaking the minds of all the officers and soldiers in Operation Zaman Lafiya.

Pentagon: Drone killed mastermind of Kenya mall attack
Melanie Eversley, USA TODAY March 19, 2015

The Department of Defense confirmed a drone strike killed Adan Garar, an al-Shabab member linked to the Westgate Mall massacre in Nairobi, Kenya that killed 67 people in 2013.

The mastermind behind the 2013 attack at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, that left 67 people dead has died after an attack by a U.S. drone, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.

The incident happened on March 12 in the area of Diinsoor, Somalia, according to a statement from the agency.
U.S. forces using a drone struck a vehicle being driven by Adan Garar, a member of the intelligence and security wing of al-Shabab, a group linked to al-Qaeda, the statement said.

"The attack was a success and resulted in the death of Garar," according to the statement.
Members of al-Shabab shot up the mall with AK-7 rifles and grenades because of Kenya's attempts to help the government of Somalia defeat the militant organization, the group has said. Along with those who died, more than 200 people were hurt in the incident at the luxury shopping center.

The Pentagon said Garar was in charge of coordinating external operations for al-Shabab, a job that included targeting Americans as well as Western interests.

Nigerian Army Noticeably Absent in Town Taken From Boko Haram
Boko Haram’s black flag is everywhere in the town of Damasak, deep in Islamist-held territory in northern Nigeria: It is painted on former administrative buildings and schools, and on the side of abandoned gas stations.
The other unmistakable sign of the Islamist militants’ recent presence is that very few residents remain in a once-thriving town of 200,000. They have either fled to the state capital, Maiduguri, or been killed by Boko Haram. Every looted and battered storefront yawns open to the dusty roadside.

Mostly, the only sound in the hot, still air is from military vehicles, carrying soldiers from the neighboring countries of Chad and Niger as they make their way through the wreckage of the deadly five-month Islamist occupation of this Nigerian town. From time to time, the Chadian soldiers ululate to celebrate their victory against the militants in a fierce firefight that stretched into last week.
The Chadians ushered a small group of journalists around for a brief look last week, offering a rare glimpse into the group’s northern Nigerian stronghold, and into the dimensions, and difficulties, of a cross-border, four-nation fight against the Islamists.

Even as the Nigerian government, with a national election looming, insists that its forces have chased Boko Haram fighters out of much of their northern territory, the deserted streets and all-foreign force here paint a different picture. Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians still cannot return home to towns that have been, nominally at least, freed from Boko Haram.
But the foreign soldiers here say they do not want to occupy somebody else’s country, and worry that the Islamist fighters will simply return if they leave and the Nigerians have not arrived to take over. [...]

Corruption blights Nigerian army's fight against rebels
Despite Nigeria spending $5.8bn on security last year, army is short of guns and ammunition in fight against Boko Haram. Once the best military in West Africa, Nigeria's army is now struggling to fend off the threat of Boko Haram.

From 2001 to 2012 the military received $19bn. Yearly, that is only about one percent of GDP, even falling to half a percent in 2006. On average, nations typically spend around two percent of GDP. But in 2014, Nigeria spent $5.8bn on security, a quarter of the total budget. Of the $5.8bn, roughly a third went to the Defence Ministry, that is $830m for the army, $440m for the navy, and $460n for the air force. Another $400m was spent on deployments and missions.

However, much of that money has allegedly fuelled corruption or been siphoned off to enrich regional governments. This has led to an under resourced military, short of guns and ammunition. It has allowed Boko Haram to extend its influence, threatening national elections which last month were postponed for six weeks so the army could take on the armed group. Meanwhile, in the prosperous oil-rich Niger Delta, it is estimated that over a five year period to 2008, oil theft and attacks by armed groups have cost the country about $100bn. [...]

VICE News traveled to Nigeria to embed with the country's army as it ramped up its fight against Boko Haram, whose rise has caused a state of emergency. As the only journalists on the front line in northern Nigeria, we witnessed the beginning of the largest military insurgency to date.

US drones target AQAP near eastern stronghold in Yemen

By Bill Roggio | August 12, 2015

The US killed five al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in a drone strike near a city in southeastern Yemen where the terror organization openly rules, and where the group’s previous emir was killed two months ago.

The strike, which was carried out by remotely piloted Predators or Reapers, took place today on a road outside of Mukallah, the provincial capital of Hadramout. Several missiles slammed into a vehicle, killing at least five fighters, according to Reuters.

The identities of those targeted were not disclosed. No senior terrorist leaders or operatives are reported to have been killed. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) did not release an official statement naming those killed in the attack.

The US is known to conduct what are called “signature strikes” against AQAP in Yemen. These strikes are not based on specific intelligence that identifies the target, but are based on a pattern of intelligence that indicates a senior leader or operative may be present. AQAP’s founder and last emir, Nasir al Wuhayshi, was killed in one such strike on June 9 in Mukallah.

The US has also targeted AQAP’s military machine as well as its leadership nodes. In one strike, on July 11, a group of local AQAP commanders as well as a container packed with weapons were targeted and destroyed. This strike contradicted a US Department of Justice white paper that claimed the drone program will target only those AQAP operatives who “present an ‘imminent’ threat of violent attack against the United States.”

The US drone campaign in Yemen has centered on Hadramout province since AQAP overran Mukallah in April of this year. Of the 11 strikes that have been recorded in Yemen since the beginning of April, nine have occurred in Hadramout.

Hadramout is the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden, and the province has become an AQAP bastion over the past several years. The jihadist organization regrouped in Hadramout and other provinces after losing control of major cities in Abyan and Shabwa provinces to government forces starting in late spring 2012.

The US appears to have obtained good intelligence on AQAP’s network in Mukallah. In addition to Wuhayshi, two other senior AQAP leaders and ideologues, Ibrahim Suleiman al Rubaish and Nasser bin Ali al Ansi, were killed in air raids in the city since April.

The drone campaign in Yemen has intensified since Wuhayshi was killed in mid-June. Prior to his death, the US launched seven attacks against AQAP in five months. Several low and mid-level local AQAP leaders are reported to have been killed in the operations. Since his death, the US has launched seven strikes in two months.

Eeben Barlow schreibt ein Buch zu "seinen Erfahrungen" in Afrika:

ZITAT
Composite Warfare: The Conduct of Successful Ground Forces Operations in Africa
As a continent, Africa presents her armies with a vast, dynamic and multidimensional operating environment. It has numerous complex and diverse ethnic, religious, cultural and tribal interests and loyalties, along with many multifaceted threat-drivers coupled to varied and infrastructure-poor terrain plus vast climatic variations. The continent is, furthermore, characterized by numerous half-won conflicts and wars fought by incorrectly structured, inadequately trained and ill-equipped armies. For many reasons, these forces have difficulty adapting to the complex, demanding and rapidly changing environments they do battle in. Similarly, the armies have difficulty in decisively defeating the various threats they face. Many of these problems stem from the fact that numerous modern-day African armies are merely clones of the armies established by their once-colonial masters, their Cold War allies or their new international allies. Many of the principles and tactics, techniques and procedures they were - and still are - being taught relate to fighting in Europe and not in Africa. Some of these concepts are not even relevant to Africa.
This book is intended as a guide and textbook for African soldiers and scholars who wish to understand the development of hostilities, strategy, operational design, doctrine and tactics. It also illustrates the importance of nonpartisanship and the mission and role of the armed forces. Officers, NCOs and their subordinates need to, furthermore, understand their role in defending and protecting the government and the people they serve. They additionally need to know how to successfully accomplish their numerous missions with aggression, audacity, boldness, speed and surprise. The book provides the reader with valuable information relating to conventional and unconventional maneuver. It also discusses how African armies can, with structured and balanced forces, achieve strategic, operational and tactical success. It covers the role of government along with operations related to war, operations other than war and intelligence operations and how these operations, operating in a coordinated and unified manner, can secure and strengthen a government.
Composite Warfare draws on the author's experiences and lessons in Central, Southern, East, West and North Africa where he has served numerous African governments as a politico-military strategist, division commander, division adviser, battalion commander and special operations commander.
