America Is Stuck With a $400 Billion Stealth Fighter That Can’t Fight

The planes have had several previously unreported ‘category 1’ flaws—military parlance for issues that can prevent a pilot from accomplishing their mission.

F-35B and F-35C Horizontal Tail Durability at Sustained Supersonic Flight

The F-35B and C deliver on all performance requirements. The potential for tailboom or horizontal tail damage during prolonged supersonic speeds was found in the highest extremes of flight testing conditions that are unlikely replicated in operational scenarios. In fact, there have been no cases of this issue occurring in the operational fleet. Additionally, this is not identified as a safety of flight concern.

We implemented a change to the coatings on the horizontal tails and tail boom beginning in Lot 8 that increases durability and resolves this concern. This update allows the F-35B and C to deliver on all performance requirements with no tail boom or horizontal tail damage concerns.

Spionage on/off?

Üblicherweise ein absolutes No-Go.

ZITAT
Horizontal tail surfaces are experiencing higher than expected temperatures during sustained high-speed/high-altitude flight, resulting in delamination and scorching of the surface coatings and structure. All variants were restricted from operations outside of a reduced envelope until the test team added instrumentation to the tailbooms to monitor temperatures on the tail surfaces. The program scheduled modification of one flight sciences aircraft of each variant with new skin coatings on the horizontal tail to permit flight testing in the currently restricted part of the high-speed/high-altitude flight envelope. The test team is adding more flight test instrumentation to help quantify the impacts of the tail heating to support necessary design changes. The program scheduled modifications on one aircraft (AF-2) to be completed in early 2013 to allow flight testing of the new skin design on the horizontal tails to proceed.

Welcher "Report" sagt genau was zu "Schäden im Dogfight"? Bitte exakt zitieren.

Was beantwortet uns dieser nichts sagende Absatz?
Was wiederum völlig inakzeptabel wäre.

Vor allem der Hersteller selbst. ;-)

"Make each program do one thing well." :-)

PARIS AIR SHOW NEWS: Lockheed Planning Major Increase in Range, Other Capabilities for F-35

6/17/2019
PARIS — The Lockheed Martin-built F-35 joint strike fighter will receive additional capabilities in the coming years including significantly enhanced range, weapons capacity and manned-unmanned teaming options, a company executive said June 17 at the Paris Air Show.
[...]
“We talked to several customers about how do we extend the range of the airplane,” Ulmer told reporters during a briefing. “We're looking at conformal fuel tanks as well as external fuel tanks on the airplane to increase the range” by about 40 percent. The F-35A currently has a combat radius of about 590 [669] nautical miles.

Other capabilities are slated to improve. By the time of Lot 15 production, Lockheed aims to increase the internal weapons bay capacity from four to six missiles and integrate new weapons into the aircraft. The fighter could potentially externally carry new hypersonic weapons that the Pentagon is pursuing, he noted. Hypersonics can travel at speeds of Mach 5 or faster and are highly maneuverable, posing a major challenge to enemy air defenses.

New sensor fusion capabilities could facilitate multi-domain operations such as missile defense, Ulmer noted.

“We've done some experimentation here and seen some very strong results as well, and that will only improve” with the technology refresh, he said.

The sensing and communications capabilities could enable the jet to team with unmanned systems, he added.

“The data sensor fusion approach to the airplane as well as our relationship with our brethren at the Skunk Works [division of the company] I think very well align relative to unmanned teaming and the F-35's ability to play in that realm,” he said.

Lockheed is planning other classified upgrades to the aircraft, which Ulmer declined to discuss.

Bitte was?

During a post-flight inspection in November 2011, it was discovered the F-35B sustained “bubbling [and] blistering” of the stealth coating on both the right and left sides of the horizontal tail and the tail boom.

During similar tests of the F-35C in December 2011, “thermal damage” that compromised the structural integrity of the inboard horizontal tail and tail boom were apparent.

Vice Adm. Mat Winter, who leads the F-35 program on behalf of the Pentagon, told Defense News that the department has taken steps to mitigate the problem with an improved spray-on coating, but added that the government will not completely fix it — instead accepting additional risk.

As justification for the decision, Winter noted that the issue was documented while the jet was flying at the very edge of its flight envelope. He also said the phenomenon only occurred once for both the B and C models, despite numerous attempts to replicate the conditions that caused the problem.

History made as UK F-35s complete first operational missions

The UK’s newest and most advanced fighter jet, the Lightning F-35B, has successfully completed its first operational missions.

Published 25 June 2019
Ministry of Defence and The Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP

F-35s have flown alongside Typhoon aircraft on operational flights over the skies of Syria and Iraq, as part of the ongoing fight against Daesh, the Defence Secretary has confirmed.

It follows a successful training period in Cyprus, known as Exercise Lightning Dawn, aimed at building capability for the aircraft and supporting elements.

Due to the exceptional performance of the aircraft, pilots, and support staff during this time, it was decided that they were ready to make their operational debut from RAF Akrotiri, alongside the Typhoons.
[...]
The first RAF F-35B operational sorties were flown on Sunday 16 June in support of Operation Shader, the UK contribution to the Global Coalition’s counter Daesh mission in Iraq and Syria. The two aircraft conducted a patrol over Syria, and UK F-35s have flown a further 12 sorties since then.

Lockheed hypes F-35′s upgrade plan as interest in ‘sixth-gen’ fighters grows

By: Valerie Insinna - June 21
LE BOURGET, Paris — As European defense firms drum up publicity about the sixth-generation fighters they plan to build, Lockheed Martin executives promoted the F-35 as the proven fifth-gen option that could blur the lines with sixth-gen planes as it is upgraded into the 2020s and beyond.

Nederland koopt acht of negen extra F-35-straaljagers

18.07.2019

Eglin AFB F-35s Hit Their Highest Mission-Capable Rate

20 Jul 2019
As President Trump's nominee for defense secretary is telling the Senate Armed Services Committee that the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jet won't meet a Pentagon goal for an 80% mission-capable rate across all military services by Sept. 30, the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin Air Force Base is nonetheless flirting with that number.

In April, the 33rd -- a graduate flying and maintenance training wing -- posted a 77.1% mission-capable rate for the 33 F-35s on its flight line, according to Lt. Savannah Stephens, the wing's public affairs officer. That's the highest mission-capable rate achieved by the wing since August of 2016, when the Air Force declared initial operational capability status had been reached for the F-35A, the Air Force's version of the jet.

For June, the 33rd Fighter Wing's F-35 mission-capable rate was down just slightly, to 76.8%, according to Stephens.

"Our trend over the last year has been getting closer and closer to the 80% mark, and that is a huge win for our wing," Stephens said in an email. "We're at the highest MC (mission-capable) rates we've ever had."

F-35 Mod Adds New Missiles To Weapons Bay

Jul 23, 2019
Lockheed Martin will modify the F-35 weapons bay to accommodate a very long-range, anti-radiation missile and support a potential future upgrade to carry up to six air-to-air missiles internally, a source close to the program says. The U.S. Defense Department awarded Lockheed Martin a $34.7 million contract on July 18 to complete the weapons bay modifications by July 2022. The contract announcement released by the Pentagon specifically calls for altering the portion of the Station 425 ...
