Danish trawler scoops up German sub in its nets

COPENHAGEN : A Danish trawler made a surprise catch when it scooped up a German submarine in its nets, forcing the vessel to rise to the surface, Danish sea rescue officials said.

The trawler was fishing in the Skagerrak waters between Norway and Denmark, about 20 nautical miles off the Danish port of Hirtshals, when it made its unusual catch.

"But the trawler's nets were not able to withstand (the weight of) this extraordinary catch," a sea rescue duty officer told AFP.

"The crew of the trawler was never in danger, they were more scared than anything else. And a German vessel helped the captured submarine to disentangle itself and continue on its route," he said.

The German sub was taking part in NATO manoeuvres in the region, "Blue Game 2004" featuring 70 vessels from 16 countries.

This is not the first time a Danish fishing boat has had a close encounter with a submarine in the region. In March 1984, three crewmen were killed when their trawler was pulled to the bottom by a German submarine caught in its nets.

"Bild": Israel will moderne deutsche U-Boote kaufen

HAMBURG (Dow Jones-VWD)--Israel will einem Zeitungsbericht zufolge zwei deutsche U-Boote vom Typ U 212 kaufen.

QUOTE
Assault ship for Israel?

The ship will be capable of carrying tanks, soldiers, helicopters, and UAVs for distances of up to 3,200 kilometers.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are considering an initiative by Maj. Gen. Yedidia Ya'ari for the purchase of a 13,000-ton multi-purpose amphibious assault ship. The ship will be capable of carrying tanks, soldiers, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on missions at distances of up to 3,200 kilometers. “Defense News” says that the ship could change the strategic balance of forces in the region.
Those supporting the initiative say that the ship will extend the range of Israel’s power to the entire Middle East. Opponents say that the ship amounts to a small aircraft carrier, which will require the acquisition of a new fleet of vessels to protect and maintain it.

If a ship is built according to IDF specifications, it will have 115 sailors, and be capable of transporting 600 soldiers. It will dwarf the Israel Navy’s three largest current ships, which are 1,200-ton Saar 5 (Eilat) missile boats, each of which has a crew of 64 sailors.

”Defense News” says that Ya’ari believes that such a ship would revolutionize the IDF’s operational capabilities, enabling it to deliver large ground and support forces far in excess of its current tactically feasible ranges.

A senior IDF strategist told “Defense News” that the new amphibious ship would support the current operational concept, which centers around strategic penetration. “The idea is to identify the problem, send forces, solve the problem, and leave,” the source said. “We have no intention of occupying territory, but we also have no intention of ignoring problems liable to threaten our national security in the coming decades.”

If the IDF general staff approves the Ya’ari initiative, it will end the Saar 5 II plan, an initiative to build a new combat ship at a cost of $700 million-$1 billion, which has been in the planning stages for five years. Lockheed-Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC), which are interested in bidding in a future tender to build the planned ship, are currently preparing their initial bids for the project.

QUOTE
Iraq stands up Coastal Defence Force

The nascent Iraqi Coastal Defence Force (ICDF) received its first two 27m patrol boats on 4 April 2004, during a ceremony on board HMS Grafton, one of the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Type 23 frigates currently on patrol in the northern Persian Gulf.

Iraq's short coastline has dictated that Iraq never really established much of a naval tradition and the country's decade-long war with Iran and the subsequent wars in 1991 and 2003 effectively destroyed the remaining vestiges of any pretence to maritime presence off the coast. Indeed during its period of sanctions and embargoes during the 1990s, the Iraqi government was more concerned with smuggling oil out and goods in through its waters than policing them in any meaningful way and in the last war, fishing vessels were pressed into service as minelayers.

The first two boats of the 400-strong force will be joined by three sister vessels by the end of May. The force is also expecting to receive 10 smaller vessels to be handed over imminently. These craft will eventually replace the US-led coalition's vessels in the coast guard and policing roles, aiming to counter terrorism and smuggling operations and generally take on responsibility for security in Iraqi waters.

@sailorGN:

QUOTE

After successful finalisation of the 30-40 kW fuel cell module, development work at Siemens
continued. Increasing the power density by a factor of two and a more compact arrangement
of the peripheral process equipment resulted in a 120 kW module - a fuel cell module with the
fourfold of power output at nearly the same dimensions as its predecessor. This cost-optimised
module is used in the submarines of Class 214.

QUOTE
Spain’s IZAR to build submarines for Taiwan?

The US Navy is reported to be on the point of awarding a contract, worth at least US$4.1 billion (E3.4 billion), to Spanish State-owned shipbuilder IZAR, to build eight diesel-electric powered S-80 class submarines with Air Independent Propulsion for the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy. The boats would be delivered to the USA for fitting out, prior to delivery. The US itself has no non-nuclear submarine building capability.

Under a E1.7 billion contract, IZAR is currently building four S-80 submarines, the first totally designed in Spain, for the Spanish Navy. The reaction of the new Spanish Socialist Government to the proposed US Navy contract is awaited with interest. The German Government has refused to allow an HDW design to be exported to Taiwan, for fear of alienating Beijing.

The Tawanese Cabinet on June 2 passed a special NT$610 billion budget for the purchase of military equipment, including NT$412 billion (US$12.3 billion) for the eight diesel-electric submarines. These were promised to Taipei in 2001 by President George W. Bush, but never previously budgeted by Taiwan. The Taiwanese Government is attempting to push the deal through now, fearing that the offer may be withdrawn if John Kerry wins the US presidential election in November.

Deputy Defence Minister Ho Shou-yeh said that “There are still many uncertain factors and the price is only a rough preliminary evaluation. A more concrete figure will be given after the US Navy has identified a shipbuilder as well as the various suppliers in Europe.”

US authorities are waiting for the special budget to be approved by the Taiwan Legislature before discussing related issues, said Ho.

According to Democratic Progressive Party legislator Tang Ho-sheng, who attended the Cabinet’s special budget meeting, the submarine package includes 144 Raytheon Mk48 torpedoes and 72 Boeing submarine-launched Harpoon anti-ship missiles. “The construction of the submarines themselves would only cost around NT$290 billion [US$8.67 billion],” said Tang.

If the Spanish Government approves the deal with the US Navy, therefore, IZAR would appear to have ample room to negotiate its price. © DAPSS S.A., 2004, Switzerland

The new one for the artillery

Member of a family of artillery missiles with vertical launching, the NLOS-LS (Not Line Of Sight-Launch System) is developed by NetFires LLC (the United States), a partnership between the American companies Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

These ground-to-ground and surface-to-surface systems can be used by various ground vehicles and can be concentrated in a network to quickly engage the target beyond the range of artillery shells with more lethal power. In this context, Raytheon develops the Loitering Attack Missile (LAM) and Lockheed the Precision Attack Missile (PAM).

The LCU (Launch Container Unit), an autonomous container, is produced by the two companies. Besides of the US Army, the NLOS-LS attrackted interest by armies of the United Kingdom (within the framework of its program Indirect Fire Precision Attack), Germany (to arm its ships of the K130 type) and Norway (for its ships of coastal defense and the protection of its ports). Let us recall that a conference on this system of weapons takes place today, to 14h00, with the Raytheon House. (Stands A9, V4-2)

BERLIN --- The Budget and Defence committees of the German Bundestag on June 30, 2004 authorized the following procurement projects:

-- Mungo: initial production batch of 388 vehicles for the protected transport of divisional special operations units, valued at 66 million euros;

-- Standard Missile 2 (SM-2) Block IIIA for the long-range air-defense of F124-class frigates;

-- Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) for the medium-range air defense of F-123 and F-124 class frigates.

The Mungo vehicle has increased protection against mines and bombs, as well as optional self-defense weapons. Starting from 2005, these light, cross-country vehicles will make a significant contribution to the protection of our soldiers. Mungo can be transported, along with an operational group of paratroopers (10 soldiers, with their equipment) by a C160 Transall transport aircraft, as well as by the German army’s CH 53 transport helicopter. Prime contractor of this program, with an order value of 66 millions, is Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), Munich, with Multicar Spezialfahrzeuge GmbH, based in Waltershausen (Thüringia) as subcontractor and manufacturer of the chassis. The Mungo contract secures approx. 140 jobs at KMW and approx. 50 jobs at Multicar. It also allows KMW to develop its specialized technical and competitive ability in the promising area of the light, protected vehicles.

The Standard Missile 2 (SM-2) Block III A and Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) missiles are necessary for the air defense of the navy’s frigates. With both systems, frigates will be able to effectively protect themselves, as well as other ships and army and air force units deployed in proximity to the coast, from air attacks.

Both frigate classes, which are assigned to the reaction force of the German Federal Armed Forces, will be used predominantly in cooperation with own forces as well as with units of allied nations. Within the Atlantic Alliance these units will form in the future an important German contribution for the maritime component of NATO Response Force (NRF).

The procurement is accomplished in economically favourable conditions in the context of international co-operation, with the USA and other European partners. German industry is taking part in the development and manufacturing of the missiles.

The order value amounts to a total of 364 million euros and covers the navy’s requirements with 78 SM-2s and 265 ESSMs.
