Royal Navy aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, has deployed to the U.S. to land fast jets on deck for the very first time. Eight years since a British aircraft carrier last flew a fast jet from her decks, the 65,000-tonne carrier has embarked two F-35B test aircraft from the Integrated Test Force (ITF), based out of Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. Around 200 supporting staff, including pilots, engineers, maintainers and data analysts joined the two ‘orange wired’ ITF test aircraft for the testing period at sea. The aim of these initial, or developmental trials, are to ascertain, through the specially equipped aircraft and sensors around the ship, the operating parameters of the aircraft and ship, in a range of conditions.

The Italian Air Force Has Deployed Six F-35A Jets To Sardinia For Advanced “Omnirole” Training
Six ItAF F-35As out of the eight currently in Italy (two more ones are at Luke Air Force Base in the U.S.) are currently at Decimomannu airbase, in Sardinia, for a 3-week deployment at the local-based RSSTA (Reparto Sperimentale e di Standardizzazione Tiro Aereo – the Air Gunnery Standardization and Experimentation Unit). The aircraft belong to the 13° Gruppo (Squadron) of the 32° Stormo (Wing), from Amendola, in southeastern Italy, that has achieved IOC (Initial Operational Capability) during TLP 18-4, on Nov. 30, 2018.
During the deployment (their third one to the Sardinian base), the Italian stealth jet will carry out various types of training activities, night and day, in coordination with the RSSTA and the Poligono Interforze di Salto di Quirra (Joint Range Salto di Quirra). Thanks to its so-called “omnirole” capabilities, which characterize it as a 5th generation platform compared to the multirole ones of previous generations, the aircraft can simultaneously undertake the whole range of tactical activities that required different types of aircraft in the past: during the same sortie, the pilots can train in a wide variety of missions, including air-to-air engagements, PGMs (Precision Guided Munitions) delivery, ISR (Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance) for data collection and information sharing, CAS (Close Air Support) to land and sea forces; electronic warfare.

World War II fighter pilot, PTSD advocate laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery
Capt Jerry Yellin, World War II fighter pilot, who flew the last combat mission in August 1945, was laid to rest with full military honors Jan. 15, at Arlington Cemetery, Va.

At the previous day’s briefing, Yellin’s wingman, 19-year-old 2nd Lt. Philip Schlamberg, had leaned over to him and said, “Captain, if we go, I’m not coming back.” Yellin responded, “What are you talking about?” Schlamberg said, “It’s just a feeling I have.” On the morning of August 14, Yellin told him, “Just stay close on my wing, tuck it in tight, you’ll be OK.” After completing their strafing mission, “Schlamberg was close in on my wing,” Yellin recalled. “I gave him the thumbs-up, he gave me a thumbs-up. I led my flight of four airplanes into some clouds. When I came out of the clouds, he was gone. Nobody heard anything, nobody saw anything. When we landed on Iwo Jima, we found out that while we were strafing, the war had been over for three hours.” Although there would be additional casualties in the coming days, and the war would not officially end until the September 2 Japanese surrender ceremony, Schlamberg was among the very last to die in World War II.

BARKHANE: Nouvelle opération contre un groupe armé terroriste
