Those skills are still beyond the reach of near-term sensors and computer algorithms. ZITAT The dogfighting drone, scheduled to enter service around 2020, will not be the first robot to try to engage in aerial combat. In 2002, the Air Force fitted short-range Stinger air-to-air missiles to Predator prop-driven drones in order to help protect the slow-flying robots from Iraqi jet fighters. A Predator patrolling over southern Iraq got into a tangle with an Iraqi MiG-25 … and was quickly shot down.

-------------------- This just in: Beverly Hills 90210 - Cleveland Browns 3

ZITAT(Air & Space Power Journal) Nightfall:
Machine Autonomy in Air-to-Air Combat Air and Space Power Journal Volume 28, Issue 3, May - June 2014 Capt Michael W. Byrnes, USAF The prevailing assumption about the future role of unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV) is that they will be complementary assets requiring manned platforms to lead them into a battle and provide human-in-the-loop command and control. Closer analysis of the essence of what John Boyd's observe, orient, decide, act (OODA) loop says about victory in the act of aerial combat indicates that it would logically favor autonomous machine pilots over human ones, provided the machine pilots had appropriate tools to carry out the tasks of their organic counterparts. The author offers a deep dive into emerging technologies ranging from advanced stealth and structural materials, to computer vision, to artificial intelligence that performs its own basic fighter maneuvering. He uses a notional UCAV design to showcase how a tactically autonomous air vehicle takes Boyd's theory to the nanosecond timescale to supersede the lethality and capability of the fifth-generation fighter approach. The article preempts common arguments against machine tactical autonomy to show that such a future is possible, defensible against cyber attacks, ethically manageable, and imperative to master before rivals do the same.
