Thales debuts new assault rifle – the F90

Eurosatory, 11 June 2012 – Thales has debuted its new F90 assault rifle at this year’s Eurosatory exhibition in Paris, France.

The F90 is an innovative and lightweight weapon that is a direct product of modern day soldier requirements on today’s battlefields. Building on the company’s extensive Australian expertise in small arms, the F90 is evolved from a battle-proven weapon that has been in service in Australia and 30 other countries for over two decades.
Features include a rifle variant weight of 3.25kg with high levels of reliability and rapid target acquisition time. The bullpup design enables a longer barrel and associated higher muzzle velocity for greater stopping power within a compact overall length.

The weapon’s open architecture incorporates a NATO tri-rail system and optional NATO magazines, while a growth path allows for the fitting of centralised power, as well as data and powered rails. The F90 also includes an integrated side-loading 40mm grenade launcher that can be attached in just a few seconds by the soldier.
Thales Australia CEO Chris Jenkins said: “The F90 is a weapon ideally suited to the modern battlefield. Light, compact and adaptable, it offers armed forces a cost-effective upgrade with a substantial degree of future-proofing. It is evolved from a tried and tested platform that has been proven again and again on operations, and is backed up by 100 years of weapons engineering, as well as leading design expertise, at our facility in Lithgow, Australia.”

The F90 is identical to the EF88-designated weapon currently being developed by the company for Australia’s LAND 125 program, and is based on the F88 platform that has been in service and evolved in Australia since the late 1980s. The weapon will be available in five variants: F90; F90(G) (grenade launcher variant); F90M (’Marksman’ variant with a longer barrel); F90M(G) and F90CQB (Close Quarters Battle – a carbine). The Marksman variant is the same length as Australia’s in-service F88SA2, but is over 0.5kg lighter, while the equivalent grenadier variant is over 1.6kg lighter.Thales is in cooperation with Austrian company Steyr Mannlicher to pursue specific opportunities, such as the French DGA FAMAS replacement project, utilising Steyr Mannlicher’s manufacturing experience and facilities.

"Infanterist der Zukunft - Erweitertes System": Rheinmetall liefert hochmoderne "Gladius"-Soldatenausstattung an die Bundeswehr


Der Düsseldorfer Rheinmetall-Konzern ist mit der Lieferung hochmoderner Soldatenausstattungen an die Bundeswehr beauftragt worden. Ein entsprechender Vertrag wurde jetzt beim Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung in Koblenz unterzeichnet.

Insgesamt 900 Soldaten (90 Infanteriegruppen) sollen in diesem ersten Beschaffungsschritt von der neuen Ausrüstung profitieren, die von Rheinmetall für die Bundeswehr entwickelt wurde und die weltweit das modernste System seiner Art darstellt. Kontingente, die die Bundeswehr in den Jahren 2013 und 2014 nach Afghanistan verlegen wird, sollen mit Gladius ausgestattet werden.

Die nun erfolgte Beauftragung an Rheinmetall ist ein bedeutender Schritt, um die infanteristischen Kräfte der Bundeswehr mit einem zukunftsweisenden System auszustatten und die Fähigkeiten der Streitkräfte auch mit Blick auf künftige Einsätze signifikant zu verbessern.

USSOCOM orders additional Carl Gustaf systems from Saab

Saab has been awarded a contract for the supply of additional Carl-Gustaf portable weapon systems and ammunition to the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).

The new deal is worth $25.8m and follows the previous $31.5m one secured by the company in December 2011 for the delivery of 126 systems to the command for use in Afghanistan.

Saab North America President Dan-Åke Enstedt said: ''Having this system in service and combat proven with US Special Operations forces is yet another stamp of approval and proof of the continued confidence that the US Special Operations command customer has in our company and our products.''

The number of units ordered has not been disclosed by the company, and the deliveries are scheduled to take place in July 2013.

The Carl-Gustaf is an 84mm reusable, shoulder-fired multi-role recoilless rifle designed to help troops to effectively engage enemy rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and machine gun team attacks at ranges of 900m or beyond.
The multi-mission weapon is normally operated by a two-man crew in armour-piercing and anti-personnel operations using high explosive, as well as smoke and illumination rounds, against a wide range of ground threats in all environments.Designed to be fired from standing, kneeling, sitting or inclined positions, the gun can be used as a viable anti-armour weapon against larger stationary targets at a range of 700m, but is less effective on moving targets due to the relatively low speed of the projectile.

The gun features a main tube with a breech-mounted Venturi recoil damper, a shoulder-mount and iron sights, equipped with 3x optical sight, offering a 300mrad field of view, luminous front and rear sight inserts, as well as an image intensification system for aiming during night or in low-visibility conditions.

As well as the US, the weapon is also in use with the armed forces of the UK, Australia, Belgium, Canada, India, Sweden, Germany and Malaysia.

GSG 9 gewinnt King Abdullah II Special Operations Center 4th Warrior Competition in Jordanien:

Germans take Warrior prize

As a precursor to SOFEX, 33 special forces teams from 16 nations took part in the annual Warrior competition, held at the King Abdullah II Special Operations Center (KASOTC) outside Amman. This year’s winner was Germany’s GSG9 counterterrorism unit, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Running from 2-6 May, with four days of live events, the Warrior competition tests teams in a variety of special forces skills and techniques, from marksmanship and weaponshandling to planning and communications. The flagship event is the King’s Challenge, which involves teams tackling a 10km course in relay, with various shooting challenges.

Warrior has grown rapidly as a competition since its inauguration in 2009. This year’s event drew teams from Afghanistan, Austria, Brunei, China, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Spain, the USA and Uganda.

Observers from Oman and the UAE were present, while teams from Algeria and Iraq had to withdraw before the competition started.

China was participating for the first time, while US participants included a civilian sheriff ’s SWAT team from Alameda County, California. Teams were also entered by the three former and reigning champions: Jordan’s General Intelligence Directorate (which won in 2009); US Marine Corps 24th MEU 2d Force Recon (2010); and Austria’s EKO Cobra (2011). Spitzenplätze bei Spezialeinheiten-Vergleichskampf in Jordanien

Das Einsatzkommando Cobra zählt zu den besten Spezialeinheiten der Welt. Das bestätigte ein Cobra-Team beim "4th Warrior Competition" in Jordanien mit dem zweiten Platz in der Teamwertung, vier Disziplinensiegen sowie dem ersten und zweiten Platz in der Einzelwertung.

35 Teams von Militär- und Polizeispezialeinheiten aus allen Kontinenten nahmen am Vergleichskampf vom 2. bis 6. Mai 2012 im King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Center (KASOTC) in der jordanischen Hauptstadt Amman teil. Das KASOTC ist eines der modernsten Trainingscenter für Antiterroreinheiten. Die Veranstaltung stand unter dem Ehrenschutz des Königs Abdullah von Jordanien.

In sechs anspruchsvollen und einsatznahen Schieß- und Taktikparcours wurde der Teamsieger ermittelt. Das Cobra-Team, Sieger im Vorjahr, wurde heuer Zweiter hinter der GSG 9 aus Deutschland. Den dritten Platz errang ein Team der jordanischen Royal Guard.

In weiteren vier Einzelbewerben wurden die besten Spezialisten der Eliteeinheiten in der "Top-Gun-KASOTC"-Wertung ermittelt. Sieger wurde Andreas B. vor seinem Cobra-Kollegen Heinz E., der im Vorjahr die Einzelwertung gewonnen hatte.

Mit insgesamt vier Disziplinen-Siegen und zwölf "Stockerlplätzen" war das Eko Cobra das erfolgreichste Team dieses Wettbewerbs. Nicht nur die sportlichen Leistungen standen im Vordergrund, sondern vor allem die internationale Zusammenarbeit und der Erfahrungsaustausch unter den Spezialeinheiten.

Aber ich denke, dass man da auch nichts großartig Anderes, als die bekannten Produkte aus dem Hause H&K sowie AR-15 Derivate, nutzt, die man auch in den anderen Spezialeinheiten des jordanischen Militärs findet (und von denen existieren ja einige Bilder).

Weapons, ammunition and associated parts. UK MOD has a requirement to acquire a new Modular Assault Rifle System (MARS) for deployment with certain military units from 2014. Light weapons, Photographic and Batteries Project Team, Defence Equipment and Support.


1 – The User shall be provided with a system that is capable of firing all in-service 5.56mm ammunition including special natures. Remarks: The exception is Blank 5.56mm ammo where it must work with only one of the in-service variants. Manufacturers must notify whether their system has been optimised for M400 or UK long nosed type blank ammo which will then be used as appropriate during trials.

2 – The User shall have an inherently accurate system in all configurations. Threshold MOE: Extreme Spread (ES) of a 5 round group at 100m not to exceed 1 Miliradian (Mil) / 3.375MOA (100mm at 100m).

3 – The User shall be provided with a system that is capable of fitting all optical ancillaries in-line without the need for additional zeroing procedures. Remarks: The User shall have the ability to mount devices along the entire length of the top attachment rail for maximum efficiency. Threshold MOE: US Mil Std 1913 Accessory Rail. Objective MOE: STANAG 4694 Ed 1 Accessory Rail

4 – The User shall have a system that he can quickly adjust in order to operate at maximum efficiency when moving in and out of confined spaces. Threshold MOE: Adjustable Stock

5 – The User shall have a system capable of automatic and semi-automatic operation. Threshold MOE: The ability to select single shot or automatic fire. Objective MOE: The ability to select single shot, burst (2-3 rd) and automatic fire.

6 – The User shall be provided with a system that can be fired from any recognised fire position.

7 – The User shall be provided with a weapon (no optic, UGL or other ancillaries fitted) with an empty magazine and iron sight fitted that is light in weight. Threshold MOE: 4.2kg.

8 – The User shall have a system that minimises the potential of giving away his location or disrupting his vision when fired. Threshold MOE: No worse audible and visible signature than current flash hider and suppressor system. Impact on POA / POI no worse than the current system. Suppressive system to be attachable and removable within 10 Secs.

9 – The User shall have a modular system that allows him to change configurations and then operate safely. Threshold MOE: With armourer support. Objective MOE: Without armourer support. Remarks: The maximum overall length with buttstock fully extended (excluding suppressor) in its longest configuration is not to exceed 960mm. The maximum overall length with buttstock fully extended (excluding suppressor) in its shortest configuration is not to exceed 810mm.

10 – The User shall have a system that is capable of operating in the following climatic conditions A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C0, C1, M1 and M2 as per DEFSTAN 00-35 Part 4.

11 – The User shall be provided with a system that has a very high probability of achieving the BFMs and Tasks without any stoppages or failures. Threshold MOE: Probability of 98 % without suppressor fitted.

12 – The User shall have a system that is supportable in accordance with the Support requirements to be defined in the Invitation to Tender.

UK MOD has selected Simunition® man-marking ammunition for certain training activities. All weapons proposed to meet the MARS requirement must offer Simunition® compatibility, which may be accomplished using third-party products. Any proposal that is dependent on introducing a different man-marking training solution will not be considered.These KURs will be evolved into a more detailed System Requirement Document (SRD) which will be issued in due course. There may be supplementary or additional System Requirements taking account of UK Police and Home Office requirements for firearms.

Candidate rifles will be required to be compatible with a range of designated in-service items that interface with the rifle, including underslung grenade launcher, day sight, flash and sound suppressors. These will be specified in the SRD. Candidate suppliers may submit alternative proposals for these items as part of their system solution. Any alternative items proposed will be evaluated against the specified in-service items for enhanced utility, and will only be considered for purchase if they offer advantages. The evaluation of any such alternative items will have no bearing on the selection of the rifle itself. Only alternative items from the preferred rifle bidder will be considered for purchase under this tender as other combinations will not have been tested.

The scope of supply in the Invitation to Tender for MARS may include:
— firm prices for the supply of an initial quantity of rifles for MOD use, anticipated to be up to 2 200,
— firm prices for the potential supply of initial quantities of underslung grenade launchers, day sights, flash and sound suppressors,
— full delivery of this initial quantity commencing no earlier than April 2014 and concluding not later than February 2016,
— firm or fixed-price options for the supply of additional rifles, underslung grenade launchers, day sights, flash and sound suppressors and associated ancillaries up to a maximum of 30 000 rifles and 10 years duration from April 2014,
— firm prices for the supply of spare parts and/or a support service for a first period of up to 5 years from April 2014,
— fixed-price options for the supply of further quantities of spare parts and/or support services for a second period of up to 5 years from the conclusion of the first period.

Elite Marine Corps units to field new pistols

The Marine Corps’ elite special operations and reconnaissance units will field thousands of new .45-caliber pistols over the next four years, military acquisition officials confirmed Thursday.

The service awarded a $22.5 million contract to Colt Defense for its M1911A1 Rail Guns. The deal was finalized Wednesday night, according to Barb Hamby, a spokeswoman for Marine Corps Systems Command in Quantico, Va. Precise details are expected to be released Thursday evening, but there is widespread speculation the order will total some 4,000 firearms.

The pistols will be manufactured at Colt’s plant in West Hartford, Conn., and delivered to the Marine Corps by 2017, Hamby said.

Designated the M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistol by the service, Colt’s Rail Gun takes a tried and true platform used since World War I and outfits it with a rail at the front of the receiver that can be used to mount the flashlights, lasers and infrared devices preferred by today’s special operations forces. While fundamentally unchanged since its inception, the weapon does use the company’s newer series 80 firing system, developed during the 1980s to increase safety by adding a firing pin block that prevents the discharge of a live cartridge if the gun is dropped or banged.

The weapon Colt submitted for this contract competition includes a dual recoil spring assembly, meant to reduce recoil. It was furnished in a desert tan color and featured a Cercoat finish designed to reduce reflection and prevent corrosion. The pistol also features more stainless steel parts, which should help it withstand the harsh environments where special operations and reconnaissance Marines operate — particularly in and around saltwater.

It’s not immediately clear whether Colt’s final prototype also includes all these flourishes.

While standard operating forces throughout the U.S. military use the NATO-standard Beretta M9 pistol, elite military and law enforcement units, including Marine special operations and force recon, have continued to use the 1911. While it requires more maintenance and care than many modern semi-automatic pistols, it is revered for its accuracy and performance in the hands of skilled shooters. Its .45-caliber rounds also pack a heavier punch than the 9mm NATO rounds used in the M9.

Other company’s that competed for the contract included Springfield Armory out of Geneseo, Ill., and Karl Lippard Designs of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Die Philippinen haben heute die Absicht bekannt gegeben, eine neue Standardwaffe für die Streitkräfte einzuführen. Die Waffe wird vom Verteidigungsministerium selbst produziert und soll die veralteten M16A1 ablösen. Im Prinzip handelt es sich um einen AR-Klon im Kaliber 7,62x37mm (nein, kein Schreibfehler).
Vielleicht findet jemand mehr Infos zu diesem ungewöhnlichen Kaliber. Ich verfolge die 5,56 vs. 7,62-Debatte schon seit geraumer Zeit und diese Entscheidung verwundert mich dann doch.

Das ist eine sehr interessante Wahl. Mal sehen ob man Waffen in dem Kaliber nicht bald öfter findet, wenn die Philippinen das wirklich einführen.

Soll wohl hauptsächlich als Munition für schallgedämpfte Waffen in den Einsatz kommen, so sagt man zumindest in anderen Foren. 5,56mm Version soll es auch geben.

Wired magazine berichtet, dass die amerikanische Militärforschungseinrichtung DARPA derzeit tatsächlich an der eierlegenden Wollmichsau des Scharfschützenwesens arbeitet: eine Optik mit Namen "One Shot XG", die alle Aufgaben eines Spotters übernehmen und die nötigen Berechnungen und Messungen für Schüsse über weite Entfernungen in Sekundenschnelle durchführen, dabei aber nicht mehr wiegen und nicht größer sein soll als ein ganz normales Glas.
Derzeit hapert es wohl an der Durchhaltefähigkeit des Systems - so reichen die Batterien nur für 20 Minuten Betrieb -, aber man glaubt sich auf dem richtigen Weg.

Die sind ja auch von der ganz schnellen Truppe. Wann wurde das G36 eingeführt, 1997? Und das M16 als Wegbereiter der 5,56mm war ja nochmal ein paar Jahrzehnte vorher dran.

Lustig wirds, wenn beim nächsten Einsatzes des "Expeditionskorps Bundeswehr" Krieg in nem Land gefürt wird, in dem keine Geschossschluckenden Lehmwände sind sondern dünne Holzwände wo die Gefahr von ungewollten Durchschüssen sind.
Dann werden alle schreien, wir brauchen Waffen die weniger Durchschlag haben da friendly fire duch Häuserwände auf kommt.

ATK received a $16.8 million engineering and manufacturing development contract modification from the U.S. Army's Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier for its XM25, Individual Semi-Automatic Airburst System. The contract funds the continuing design, integration, production and testing of fully functional systems to ensure the weapon's final design meets performance requirements and is production-ready prior to fielding.

The Army conducted Forward Operational Assessments (FOA) with early XM25 prototype weapons deployed in Afghanistan from November 2010 through May 2012 with soldiers actively employing them on patrols in areas experiencing high levels of enemy activity.

PHASE II: Exploring Improvements
PM SW completed its best value M4 bolt and bolt carrier assembly competition in April 2012, though the competition was scheduled to conclude in summer 2013. More than six months of testing and evaluation determined that none of the 11 competing designs met the overall requirements outlined in the solicitation. The M4’s current bolt and bolt carrier assembly outperforms the competing designs in the areas of reliability, durability, and high-temp/low-temp tests. The Army saved nearly $2 million as a result of the early completion of the competition.

The conclusion of the bolt competition, however, does not impact the search for a better forward rail assembly. PM SW completed bid sample testing for a forward rail assembly competition in early August. Bei den Russen tut sich anscheinend etwas im Bereich MG.

1. Bullpup-PKP, anscheinend für den Bedarf von Spezialeinheiten




2. Ein 5,45x39-MG mit umstellbarer Kadenz, verschiedenen Rohren, einstellbarer Schulterstütze, aber ohne Gurtzufuhr; vermutlich als RPK-74-Ersatz zunächst für den Bedarf des Innenministeriums

Hat das "Bullpup-MG zwei Abzüge? Oder habe ich einen Knick in der Optik?

Hat es.
Und auf dem zwoten Bild sieht es für mich sogar so aus als sei der vordere Abzug mechanisch an den hinteren gekoppelt (die silberne Strebe am hinteren Abzug). Auf dem ersten Bild ist der hintere Abzug ja leider durch den Trageriemen verdeckt.
Scheint also reichlich improvisiert zu sein die ganze Konstruktion.

Sieht in der Tat so aus, als hätten die Zenit-Tüftler lediglich einen Sturmgriff und einen zweiten Pistolengriff kurz hinter der nach vorne verlegten Munitionszufuhr angebracht.

Ja, das MG wurde anscheinend auf dem nächstbesten Hinterhof umgebaut. Für die ganze Konzeption scheint es aber, eine Nachfrage zu geben.
