Rakete verfehlt US-Kriegsschiffe

Designer Selected for Australian Air Warfare Destroyers
Posted 19-Aug-2005 04:55

The Australian Government has chosen Gibbs & Cox as the preferred ship designer for the Royal Australian Navy's USD $4.5 billion SEA 4000 Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) program. The US firm Gibbs & Cox beat out Germany's Blohm + Voss and Spain's Navantia to join a team made up of ship builder ASC Shipbuilder Pty Ltd and combat system engineer Raytheon Australia.

\"The selection of Gibbs and Cox as platform designer now completes the team whose responsibility it is to deliver the project,\" Defence Minister Hill said. Nevertheless, the final AWD ship may be a modified version of one of the losers' designs.

Gibbs & Cox were the lead ship designers for the DDG 51 Arleigh Burke-Class AEGIS Destroyer, the first destroyer with the AEGIS system and currently the main air defense and missile strike platform in the US Navy. Their evolved Arleigh Burke design will now compete with an Australianised version of Navantia's existing F100 AEGIS Frigate, and will be further considered by the Government as part of the next phase of the project.

Blohm + Voss' F124 Sachsen Class air defense frigate design is no longer in the running.

Senator Hill said Gibbs & Cox, a United States based company, was chosen through a competitive tender evaluation process, based on the recommendation of the Source Selection Board whose work (like previous contracts in this competition) was reviewed by AWD Program Probity Advisers KPMG and also independently by Sir Laurence Street.

Senator Hill said the Defence program office would now advise on a location to establish a state of the art AWD System Centre which will house up to 200 personnel working on the development and life-long support of the vessels. The Government has provided $455 million towards the current phase of the project which includes further design work, workforce skilling, initial infrastructure investment and facilities construction.

The SEA 4000's AEGIS combat system will provide significantly increased protection from air attack for troops being transported and deployed, integration with the US Navy and other Coalition partners, long-range air warfare defense for Royal Australian Navy task groups, and a coordinated air picture for fighter and surveillance aircraft. The destroyers will also have an anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare capability, as well as the ability to embark a helicopter at sea. They are scheduled to begin entering service with the Royal Australian Navy in 2013.

No Barnacles On Us, Thanks to UK Type 23 Frigate's New Coating

The Type 23 frigate HMS Northumberland began her journey back to Devonport on Aug 11/05, following a year-long, GBP 20 million (USD $36.1 million) refit at Babcock's dockyard in Rosyth. That refit added a number of combat enhancements, and also made the frigate the first Royal Navy ship to have a revolutionary silicone paint called Intersleek 700 applied to its hull.

Now, why does this matter?

Until now, toxic substances known as anti-foulings have been used to keep the hull of a ship clean and prevent marine growth from attaching. The International Maritime Organisation banned the further application of Tributyltin (TBT) on ships as of Jan. 1/03, however, with a complete prohibition of TBT on ship's hulls as of Jan 1/08.

TBT alternatives like self-polishing and self-smoothing copper or zinc compounds are unaffected by this ban, but they still rely on deterring marine growth through the release of chemicals into the water.

Instead of taking this approach, Intersleek 700 provides an ultra smooth, slippery, easy clean surface that prevents barnacles et. al. from clinging and does away with the need to use toxic chemicals. Its superior smoothness is also claimed to decreases hull friction whilst the vessel is in motion, potentially promoting enhanced fuel efficiency and speed.

Regular checks by divers will monitor how the trial is progressing, but the full extent of protection won't be known until HMS Northumberland enters her next docking period in 2009. Defence Talk reports that if and when this trial is deemed successful, the Royal Navy will adopt Intersleek paint throughout the fleet.

HMS Northumberland also received a number of combat improvements during her refit. She has been fitted with the very latest sonar technology, and converted to operate the Merlin (EH-101 derivative) anti-submarine helicopter. These, coupled with the recently introduced S2170 surface ship torpedo defence system, significantly upgrade her anti-submarine capabilities. Her general purpose capabilities also have been enhanced by the fitting of a modified 4.5 inch gun, while reliability has been safeguarded by major overhauls of the ship's supporting infrastructures.

Type 23 Duke Class frigates were first commissioned in 1989, just a few years after the Falklands War. They are now the mainstay of the Royal Navy's surface fleet, forming around half of the total frigate/ destroyer force in the Royal Navy. Originally designed for anti-submarine warfare, Type 23s have evolved into multi purpose ships with the addition of the MBDA (formerly Matra BAe Dynamics) Seawolf surface-air missiles and Boeing Harpoon surface-to-surface missiles. The effectiveness of these ships is enhanced by their stealth design, which reduces their radar signature significantly. The last Type 23 frigate was commissioned in 2002.

In July 2004, the UK Ministry of Defence announced that the Royal Navy's Type 23 fleet was to be reduced to 13. Three Batch 1 vessels (HMS Norfolk, Grafton and Marlborough) will be retired in early 2006, and have been offered to the Chilean Navy.

UK design is only option for joint carrier development, says UK minister
By James Murphy, Reporter

UK Secretary of State for Defence Dr John Reid has said France must accept the UK's existing design baseline as the basis for any cross-channel co-operation on the respective PA2 and CVF carrier programmes.

Asked about whether the stage had been reached where the French must accept the UK design, Dr Reid said: \"Not to put too fine a point on it; that would be the assumption.\"

The French are believed to have made a number of proposals over CVF and recently concluded an industrial study into the viability of the UK design, but Dr Reid was adamant that the programme could not be delayed or made more expensive by meeting French requirements.

He said: \"The French have made a proposal but it will depend on whether they can give us a better timeframe.\"

Dr Reid, speaking at BAE Systems naval shipyard in Scotstoun, Glasgow, where the first Type 45 destroyer, HMS Daring, is being constructed, said he had met his French counterpart, Michele Alliot-Marie, in early August to discuss the carrier issue.

A spokesman for the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) said it had been liaising with the France's Délégation Générale pour l'Armement (DGA) procurement agency, but no deadline had been put to the French for a decision.

However, the spokesman added that the MoD was \"keen to move forward with [the CVF programme] and won't let French involvement hold up our plans\".

Office of Naval Research lifts veil on Sea Jet
By Andrew Koch JDW Bureau Chief, Washington DC and
Richard Scott, JDW Naval Editor, London

The US Navy's Office of Naval Research (ONR) has unveiled an advanced electric ship demonstrator (AESD) vessel designed to test and show emerging electric ship and propulsion technologies.

Named Sea Jet, the craft was christened at a ceremony at the US Naval Surface Warfare Center's Acoustic Research Detachment in Bayview, Idaho, on 24 August.

The new ONR-funded 40.5 m craft was built by Dakota Creek Industries in Anacortes, Washington, to an overall AESD design developed by Computer Sciences Corporation. The vessel, which is a scaled representation of a destroyer-sized surface ship, was delivered in modules that were then assembled at Bayview.

Adopting the 5565 tumblehome hullform earlier tested in the DD(X) destroyer programme, the AESD's first application is to test Rolls-Royce Naval Marine's AWJ-21 waterjet technology.

MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- No Sailors or merchant seamen were injured when a U.S. Navy submarine and a commercial cargo vessel collided in the Persian Gulf Sept. 5.

The collision between USS Philadelphia (SSN 690) and the Turkish-flagged M/V Yaso Aysen occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. local time while the submarine was conducting surfaced operations as it transited to Bahrain for a scheduled port visit.

The submarine's propulsion plant was unaffected by this event. Philadelphia will continue to Bahrain for inspection of any potential exterior damage.

The incident is under investigation.

Philadelphia is currently on a regularly scheduled deployment to the U.S. Navy Central Command area of responsibility conducting Maritime Security Operations (MSO). U.S. nuclear-powered submarine collides with cargo ship in Gulf
By Jim Krane, Associated Press Writer  |  September 5, 2005

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates --A nuclear-powered U.S. Navy submarine collided with a Turkish cargo ship in the Persian Gulf early Monday, the U.S. Navy reported.

Nobody was injured and both ships appeared to suffer only superficial damage, said the spokesman for the U.S. Navy 5th Fleet, Cmdr. Jeffrey Breslau.

It was the U.S. Navy's second collision with a civilian vessel in the Gulf in 14 months.

The USS Philadelphia was traveling on the surface of the Gulf when it hit the Turkish-flagged M/V Yaso Aysen at around 2:00 a.m. local time, said a statement from the 5th Fleet Headquarters in Bahrain.

The collision happened about 30 miles northeast of Bahrain, said Breslau.

The Philadelphia was conducting surface operations on its way to Bahrain for a scheduled port visit, the Navy said. Afterward, the submarine continued to Bahrain where inspectors will check it for damage.

The submarine's nuclear-powered propulsion plant was not damaged in the crash, the Navy said.

Breslau said the Turkish ship, a bulk carrier, suffered minor damage to its hull just above the water line.

The ship weighed anchor at the site of the crash and a U.S. Coast Guard vessel was sent to offer help, Breslau said. An initial inspection found the cargo vessel to be seaworthy.

The cause of the collision was under investigation, Breslau said.

The Philadelphia, launched in Groton, Conn., in 1974, has a crew of 125, Breslau added.

The submarine is part of a fleet of U.S. and allied navy vessels conducting what are called \"maritime security operations\" in the Gulf against the smuggling of weapons and drugs and movement of terrorists.

In July 2004, the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy collided with a dhow in the Gulf, leaving no survivors on the traditional Arab sailing boat.

The Navy relieved the Kennedy's commander, Capt. Stephen B. Squires, after the incident. The Kennedy itself was unscathed, but two jet fighters on the deck were damaged when one slid into the other as the carrier made a hard turn to avoid the dhow

Damage To Groton-based Sub Is Worse Than Expected
USS Philadelphia, Turkish ship collided

By ROBERT A. HAMILTON
Day Staff Writer, Navy/Defense/Electric Boat
Published on 9/10/2005

Groton — The collision between the USS Philadelphia and a Turkish merchant ship in the Persian Gulf this week left the two ships entangled, unable to separate for more than an hour, Navy sources said.

In addition, a preliminary assessment of the damage has shown that it is more extensive than indicated earlier and that some major repairs could be necessary.

The worst damage includes a rather large hole in the rudder, scoring on at least one propeller blade, damage to a periscope and damage to the fairwater planes, the large fins on the sail of the submarine that help it maintain depth control when it is submerged, the sources said.

There is a fairly long list of other damage as well, the sources said. The hull has a small dent, the housing for the towed sonar array was crumpled, some sound-absorbing tiles were ripped up and a number of scrapes were left along the length of the ship.

The Philadelphia has been modified to carry a dry-deck shelter used by Special Forces to exit the submarine with their gear while the boat is submerged. It was not on board at the time, but the mounting gear was damaged in the collision, so the accident could have been more serious had it been in place, the sources said.

Sources have said the 625-foot, 52,000-ton freighter M/V Yaso Aysen was coming up behind the submarine about 30 miles off the Bahrain coast at 2 a.m. Monday when it apparently ran right up over the back of the ship, scraping along the starboard side of the hull.

The freighter sustained a rip in its hull about 100 feet long, and was in a shipyard in Bahrain awaiting repairs this week. The submarine, 360 feet long and barely one-eighth the displacement of the Aysen, was on its way to Bahrain for a scheduled port call and continued there under its own power. It is in a shipyard undergoing a damage assessment, officials have said.

The Navy is investigating the accident, and has taken no action against anyone on the Philadelphia. The service has said it cannot comment on damages until an initial assessment is completed.

Hm was mag das wohl heissen?

Wer weiss, was/wann/ob/wieviel MÜKE wird.

New high-speed frigate offers affordability and adaptability
Günter Endres

An impressive high-speed frigate design is being unveiled at DSEi by the DML Group. Known as the FC65, this concept surface combatant is said to offer high capability in both offensive and defensive roles.

Approaching 150m (500ft) in length and with a displacement of 6,600 tonnes loaded, the vessel is powered by twin MTR30 gas turbines with four large waterjets, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 35 knots, while being sufficiently efficient to provide an endurance of more than 7,000 nautical miles (13,000km). Two AgustaWestland Merlin helicopters can be hangared, and the flight deck is big enough for the largest rotorcraft to land comfortably.

Crucial considerations in arriving at this design were to produce an affordable and capable warship that has enough built-in adaptability to enable it to be reconfigured rapidly for specific roles, and to meet future, as yet unknown, requirements. The FC65 has also been provided with flexible accommodation to allow manning structures in line with different tasks.

Adaptability is further enhanced through a flexible 40 x 12m (130 x 40ft) internal cargo deck, large enough to permit transportation of a wide range of vehicles, stores, boats, personnel or other cargo.

It is also provided with sea interfaces for delivery of autonomous vehicles into the battlespace. The FC65 also features a versatile launch system for both offensive and defensive stores, and has a 5in gun to provide shore bombardment support. Special Forces are catered for in the aft deck.

Central to the FC65’s high level of adaptability are the mission systems, which all feature open architectures. Analysis of the weapons and sensor requirements against a range of scenarios has identified those systems that must be quickly and effectively embarked, and their optimum location. These key sites have been designed with standard interfaces to minimise reconfiguration time.

The FC65 concept can be configured to undertake all military and non-military roles, from benign and constabulary, to task group command and land attack/ASW functions.

A new patrol vessel design is also being shown by the Devonport Royal Dockyard-based DML Group on Stand 1374.
