NATO ponders power rail for infantry weapons
23 October 2007

A leading member of a NATO Research and Technology study team has laid out future possibilities for the standardisation of small arms, including the use of electrified power rails for accessories and sensors.

Per G Arvidsson, the Integration and Interoperability Issues for Dismounted Soldier Weapon Systems, Technical Interfaces (TI) team leader, told Jane's that recommendations would be made to NATO to develop a new type of rail-mount system capable of supplying power to attachments on future rifles.

Given the increasing number of electro-optical sights and sensors used with small arms, attention has been focused on how power might best be supplied to them. Currently most such items are powered by integral batteries, often increasing the weight and volume of sensors by more than 50 per cent. This additional weight affects accuracy. Arvidsson told Jane's: "As most [accessories] are mounted around the hand guard, the centre of gravity is moved forward. This affects the handling of the weapon."

NATO is therefore looking to replace the batteries of individual sensors with a centralised power supply. Arvidsson said that Germany was considering locating a powerpack in the butt stock of the G 36 assault rifle. Other ideas include a battery in the pistol grip of a weapon. The use of smaller emergency batteries to replace the main power supply in the event of failure needs also to be examined.

The options for transferring power to the sensors via the rail, either through galvanic contact or magnetic induction, are also under examination.

Image: At present infantry weapon attachments are powered by individual batteries; however, new rail mounts could see power supplied from a central source. (German MoD)

ZITAT
Veterans aged 20-24, who are those most likely to have served during the War on Terror, are killing themselves when they return home at rates estimated to be between 2.5 and almost 4 times higher than non-vets in the same age group. (22.9 to 31.9 per 100,000 people as compared to just 8.3 per 100,000 for non-vets).

ZITAT
It found that veterans were more than twice as likely to commit suicide in 2005 than non-vets. (Veterans committed suicide at the rate of between 18.7 to 20.8 per 100,000, compared to other Americans, who did so at the rate of 8.9 per 100,000.)

Unsinn.

More than six times as many males as females ages 20 to 24 died by suicide."

Ist das m24 nicht viel präziser als das SR25? (Reptierer, weniger bewegbare Teile usw.?)

Snipers to get new longer range rifles
14 Nov 07

Snipers in the Army, Royal Marines and RAF Regiment are to get a new rifle that will give them lethal precision at even greater distances under a £4 million contract announced today, Wednesday 14 November 2007.
WO1 Kieren 'Mack' Macmahon of the Infantry Trials and Development Unit based at the Land Warfare Centre in Warminster demonstrating the new sniper rifle
The British firm Accuracy International Ltd will supply 580 rifles with day telescopic sights for snipers across the Services, which will fire a larger calibre bullet than the existing weapon.

The new rifle is being supplied as part of a broader Sniper System Improvement programme to give UK snipers more power, precision and stealth than ever before. All-weather new advanced day and night sights will mean snipers can operate around the clock in difficult conditions, and laser technology will allow distant targets to be accurately located.

Baroness Taylor, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, said:

"We are committed to providing our troops on the front line with the equipment they need. Military snipers provide vital capability on operations, defeating the enemy and protecting our troops on the ground.

"In response to feedback from operations we are investing in new sniper equipment. The first contract is for the new longer range rifle and day sight, and we expect to start taking deliveries of this kit early next year."

WO1 Kieren 'Mack' Macmahon of the Infantry Trials Development Unit (ITDU) said:

"ITDU has carried out a full trial and assessment of the new sniper rifle in different climatic conditions and it has performed well throughout.

"The weapon is a great improvement on the current in-service sniper rifle. The new sight allows greater engagement distances, it can be fitted with a suppressor allowing the sniper to get closer to the enemy without risk of compromise, and it has been fitted with a butt spike to aid stability during firing.

"We now have a sniper rifle that meets the latest user requirement."

Training units will familiarise themselves with the weapon and how it works with other parts of the sniper system. The rifle is due to be ready for operational use next spring.

Other elements of the Sniper System Improvement programme include night sights, spotting scopes, laser range finders and tripods, and will be sourced from a variety of suppliers taking the total procurement value to over £11 million.

The British Army is to double the number of snipers it has - and also to increase their skill and power.
----------------------

The British Army super snipers who will target terrorists ... from three-quarters of a mile

By CHRISTOPHER LEAKE
14th April 2007

The British Army is creating a new breed of super-sniper to take on insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan who use innocent women and children for cover.

Until recently the Army's regiments had an average of just four snipers each and they were taught the basics of their role within their units.

But now senior officers have decided to double the number of snipers - and to train them to a far higher standard on an intensive eight-week course at the Army's weapons training ground in Brecon, Mid Wales, where they will learn the kind of advanced skills previously limited to units such as the SAS.

To complete their transformation into super-snipers, they will be trained to use a devastating new weapon - the British-made L115A1 rifle which can bring down an enemy target nearly three-quarters of a mile away with remarkable accuracy.

Army insiders say its great advantage is that snipers will be able to kill with a single shot, avoiding the "collateral damage" of hitting innocent bystanders.

Although the L115A1 will not officially be used by regular soldiers until next year, Army sources admitted last night that a small number would probably be trialled in the two war zones in the next few months.

The weapon will replace the less powerful L96 sniper rifle, which has a shorter kill range of just over half a mile. Most frontline soldiers use the standard Army issue SA80 rifle, accurate only to about a quarter of a mile.

The doubling of sniper numbers will bring the total in the Army to just under 300. Depending on military needs, snipers could be seconded between regiments to maximise efficiency.

Sniping has become a vital skill in Iraq and Afghanistan as insurgents increasingly use groups of women and children for cover while launching attacks on British troops.

The new super-snipers will be able to eliminate the gunmen while minimising any risk to the innocent civilians surrounding them.

Top brass believe they will also be able to tackle Iraqi snipers who have been using high-power Russian weapons to target British soldiers in the Basra area.

In a deadly game of cat and mouse, insurgent snipers hide their weapons under their clothes and move around in innocent-looking cars or trucks, melting into a crowd after firing at troops.

Tory MP Patrick Mercer, a former infantry regiment commander, said last night: "The crucial thing is one shot, one kill, with no collateral damage to civilians who may well be used to shield enemy gunmen.

"Sniping is a desperately important skill that requires as much time and resources as the Army can give it."

Scores of soldiers are clamouring to join the new sniping course. The first, earlier this year, attracted 20 soldiers. The current course had 56 men applying for 40 places. Thirty-nine names are already down for July and 25 per cent of the November course is full.

As well as marksmanship, snipers are also taught how to get into enemy territory without being detected, how to move to a firing position and then how to escape. The course also covers map reading, observation skills, physical fitness and stalking.

Major Marcus Braithwaite-Exley of the Scots Guards, commanding officer of the Direct Fire Division at Brecon's Support Weapons School, said that the high-intensity operations in Iraq and Afghanistan had led to the central sniping course being introduced.

Major Braithwaite-Exley said: "Snipers must be able to get into enemy territory without being detected, move to a firing position and escape.

"And while soldiers will be used to firing the SA80 weapon, here they will be equipped with the L96 rifle, which has more sophisticated sights.

"People are very quickly realising the importance and lethality of the sniper on military operations."

An MoD spokesman said: "Sniping is a vital soldiering skill and we need as many trained snipers as possible."

Tory Shadow Defence Minister Mark Harper said: "Any improvement in operational capabilities is good news.

"Hopefully this development will start dealing with the threat from insurgent snipers."
