ZITAT Royal Navy Lands 1st F-35B on New Carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth September 28, 2018 For the first time, a Royal Navy pilot has taken off and landed an F-35B on a British aircraft carrier, eight years after the UK retired its last generation of aircraft carriers. Royal Navy Cmdr. Nathan Gray, 41, made history on Sept. 25 by flying from Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland to the carrier, landing, and then taking off using the ship’s ski-ramp. https://breakingdefense.com/2018/09/royal-n...ueen-elizabeth/ Videos: The first landing of an F-35B Lighting II Jet on HMS Queen Elizabeth First F-35 takes off from HMS Queen Elizabeth -------------------- "avenidas/avenidas y flores/flores/flores y mujeres/avenidas/avenidas y mujeres/avenidas y flores y mujeres y/un admirador" - Eugen Gomringer

ZITAT All US F-35s grounded worldwide
October 10, 2018 The Pentagon announced Thursday it is grounding its entire fleet of F-35s, just days after the first crash of an F-35B led investigators to suspect there is a widespread problem with the advanced fighter’s fuel tubes. “The U.S. Services and international partners have temporarily suspended F-35 flight operations while the enterprise conducts a fleet-wide inspection of a fuel tube within the engine on all F-35 aircraft,” the F-35 Joint Program Office announced in a statement Thursday morning. “If suspect fuel tubes are installed, the part will be removed and replaced. ZITAT Most F-35s return to flight operations after fuel tube problem October 16, 2018 WASHINGTON — After a fuel tube problem sidelined all operational F-35 aircraft last week, more than 80 percent of jets have been cleared to return to flight, the F-35 joint program office stated Monday. In a Oct. 15 statement, the JPO confirmed that the U.S. services and international partners have completed inspections of their F-35 inventories for faulty fuel tubes. The aircraft that are not impacted by the bad tubes — which are a component in Pratt & Whitney’s F135 engine — are back in flying status. “The F-35 Joint Program Office continues to work closely with the military services to prioritize fuel tube replacements using the current spares inventory,” the JPO said. “Pratt & Whitney is rapidly procuring more parts to minimize the overall repair timeline for the remaining jets. Current inventory will restore about half of the impacted jets to flight operations, and the remaining aircraft are expected to be cleared for flight over the coming weeks.” [...] It is still unclear exactly how the defective fuel tubes impact the jet’s performance or how serious a safety threat they pose during flight operations. Joe DellaVedova, a spokesman for the JPO, declined to discuss the specific problems that led the program office to call for a fleetwide inspection, saying that details could not be released until the Marine Corps completes its accident investigation. Also still up in the air is whether the Pentagon or Pratt & Whitney will be stuck paying the tab for retrofitting the fleet. Spokesmen from the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy declined to lay out exactly how many of their aircraft had been impacted by the faulty fuel tubes. However, as Lockheed Martin delivered its 300th F-35 in June, 20 percent of the operational F-35 fleet can be estimated to be about 60 aircraft across the U.S. and international operators. The JPO called the fuel tube problem an “isolated incident” that would not impact F-35 deliveries. A total of 91 F-35s are planned to be delivered to the U.S. military and foreign customers this year. ZITAT Japan Considering More F-35s; First SRVL for Royal Navy
October 16, 2018 As part of measures to keep up with China’s rising air power, Japan is considering the purchase of 20 more Lockheed Martin F-35As for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF), following on from earlier government discussions. According to a report by local newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun procurement will begin as early as 2020 and will be part of the next Medium Term Defense Program for Fiscal Years 2019-23. The new batch of 20 F-35As is to replace around half of the 200 license-built F-15J Eagles, some of which are facing obsolescence. Currently, Japan has committed to 42 conventional takeoff F-35As to replace three squadrons of F-4/RF-4 Phantoms based at Hyakuri air base. [...] In the meantime, off the eastern seaboard of the United States, the Royal Navy achieved a major milestone over the weekend of October 13/14 when BAE Systems test pilot Peter Wilson performed the first ever SRVL (shipborne rolling vertical landing) recovery in an F-35B. This technique involves the F-35 approaching the carrier from astern with a combination of forward speed (and thus wingborne lift) and vertical thrust. It considerably increases the unused fuel/weapons bring-back capability when compared with the standard landing technique of coming to a hover alongside before maneuvering over the deck. The SRVL maneuver is unique to the Royal Navy, as only the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth has a flight deck large enough for it to be employed safely. However, the U.S. Marine Corps is watching closely, and test pilot Major Michael Lippert—one of four from the joint test team aboard the ship—is expected to make the first SRVL by an American pilot. ZITAT F-35 Combat Missions Now Have Operational "Threat Library" - Mission Data Files
F-35 is conducting attacks, surveillance operations and combat missions with an updated on-board “threat library” October 23, 2018 By Kris Osborn - Warrior Maven The Pentagon's F-35 is conducting attacks, surveillance operations and combat missions with an updated on-board “threat library” of Mission Data Files engineered to identify enemy threats in key regions around the globe. “The AORs (Areas of Responsibility) for current operations where our forces are -- currently have adequate Mission Data Files,” Vice Adm. Mat Winter, Program Executive Officer for the F-35 program, told a group of reporters. Described as the brains of the airplane, the "mission data files" are extensive on-board data systems compiling information on geography, air space and potential threats-- such as enemy fighter jets -- in areas where the F-35 might be expected to perform combat operations, Air Force officials explained. Despite some delays with development, involving software engineering and technical development at Eglin AFB, Fla., the process is now fully on track to finish by 2019, Winter said. ZITAT Massive F-35 deal covers production into 2023
15 November 2018 Lockheed Martin has won a $22.7 billion contract to supply 255 F-35 Lightning II fighters for the three branches of the US armed services and international operators. The contract covers 106 F-35s for the USA, comprising 64 F-35As for the air force, 26 F-35Bs for the marines, and 16 F-35Cs for the navy, a US Department of Defense contract announcement states. In addition, 71 F-35As and 18 F-35Bs will go to international programme participants, and 60 F-35As to customers under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) process. [...] In September, the two parties signed a landmark deal that lowered the price of F-35As procured in low rate initial production (LRIP) lot 11 to $89.2 million, dropping below $90 million for the first time, and 5.4% better than the previous production lot. The September deal saw the unit prices of the short-take-off vertical-landing (STOVL) F-35B drop 5.7% to $116 million, and the carrier capable F-35C’s 11.1% to $108 million. ZITAT Ruling bloc working team OKs replacing 99 old F-15 fighters with F-35s
December 6, 2018 (Mainichi Japan) TOKYO -- A working team of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner Komeito discussing the content of the upcoming national defense program guidelines approved a government plan on Dec. 5 to replace 99 older F-15 mainstay fighter aircraft with F-35 jets. The panel, meanwhile, decided to continue discussions on a plan to upgrade the Maritime Self-Defense Force's Izumo-class helicopter carriers into full-fledged aircraft carriers, because government officials' explanations of the plan differed from their past Diet testimonies. The Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) operates 201 F-15s, but 99 of them are too old to be upgraded with the latest capabilities and their replacements were under consideration. The government decided to pick the F-35A stealth jet because some of the aircraft entered ASDF service this year and expanding its wing groups would be beneficial in terms of pilot training and maintenance. Some of the F-15 replacements will be F-35B models with short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities. What the F-15X doesn't include is a high price. The War Zone has learned that Boeing intends to deliver the F-15X at a flyaway cost well below that of an F-35A—which runs about $95M per copy. The F-15 is kind of in a class by itself in range and performance,” Aboulafia said. It’s faster, carries a lot more and can go a lot farther than the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the newest and the most expensive Pentagon program, The F-35 is, however, stealthy, which the F-15 isn’t, Aboulafia said. -------------------- "avenidas/avenidas y flores/flores/flores y mujeres/avenidas/avenidas y mujeres/avenidas y flores y mujeres y/un admirador" - Eugen Gomringer

ZITAT Updated F-35 Will Get Maritime Strike Capability 12/20/2018 The Block IV version of the F-35 will add a fifth “mission thread” to the four missions it already performs—that of “expanded surface warfare”—Joint Strike Fighter Program Executive Officer Vice Adm. Mat Winter said in a Wednesday interview with Air Force Magazine. The Joint Program Office also has endorsed keeping Turkey as an F-35 partner despite concerns about that country buying a Russian-made missile defense system, Winter said. He also confirmed Japan’s expanded order for F-35s and said the Navy is on track to be operational with the C model of the fighter in two months. The new mission boils down to improved capability “in maritime strike,” Winter told Air Force Magazine. The four core missions in the F-35 baseline version are: air superiority, suppression and destruction of enemy air defenses, close air support, and strategic attack of key targets. The Block 3F version can do limited strikes against ships, but Winter explained the radar and other sensor functions needed to attack land targets are different for attack of sea targets. The update in Block IV will allow the F-35 to be effective in the sea strike role as well, he said. The Navy/Air Force Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM), a variant of the AGM-158 JASSM-ER, is not a fundamental element of the new mission capability, Winter said. Although the F-35 has had fit checks of LRASM externally and can probably carry the weapon internally, the Navy’s threshold munition for the mission is the AGM-154 Joint Stand-Off Weapon, or JSOW, he said, noting that LRASM may be added later. [...] Winter also said the Navy is “on track” to declare Initial Operational Capability with the F-35C onboard the USS Carl Vinson in February. “They just finished their ‘safe for flight’ [certification] with VFA-147 on board the Carl Vinson last week, that’s a major milestone,” Winter reported. “That means all the elements for VFA-147 will be available for the first squadron for deployment. ...The training systems are the remaining elements that are being delivered.” http://www.airforcemag.com/Features/Pages/...Capability.aspx -------------------- "avenidas/avenidas y flores/flores/flores y mujeres/avenidas/avenidas y mujeres/avenidas y flores y mujeres y/un admirador" - Eugen Gomringer

ZITAT Defence officials also pointed out that Japan will stop using a final assembly and check-out (FACO) facility for the country’s F-35As from FY 2019 and start buying completed F-35As and F-35Bs to reduce procurement costs. https://www.janes.com/article/85299/japan-t...ears?from_rss=1 -------------------- "avenidas/avenidas y flores/flores/flores y mujeres/avenidas/avenidas y mujeres/avenidas y flores y mujeres y/un admirador" - Eugen Gomringer
