Der Anlaß: ZITAT Danish trawler scoops up German sub in its nets </font>
COPENHAGEN : A Danish trawler made a surprise catch when it scooped up a German submarine in its nets, forcing the vessel to rise to the surface, Danish sea rescue officials said. The trawler was fishing in the Skagerrak waters between Norway and Denmark, about 20 nautical miles off the Danish port of Hirtshals, when it made its unusual catch. "But the trawler's nets were not able to withstand (the weight of) this extraordinary catch," a sea rescue duty officer told AFP. "The crew of the trawler was never in danger, they were more scared than anything else. And a German vessel helped the captured submarine to disentangle itself and continue on its route," he said. The German sub was taking part in NATO manoeuvres in the region, "Blue Game 2004" featuring 70 vessels from 16 countries. This is not the first time a Danish fishing boat has had a close encounter with a submarine in the region. In March 1984, three crewmen were killed when their trawler was pulled to the bottom by a German submarine caught in its nets. |

QUOTE HDW Delivers the Frigate HAMBURG Three Months Early
(Source: HDW; issued Sept. 24, 2004) The new frigate HAMBURG, which is destined for the German Navy, was handed over to the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) today by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Kiel. It was delivered three months ahead of schedule. The frigate is the second in a series of three class 124 frigates being built by the three shipyards Blohm+Voss GmbH (Hamburg), Nordseewerke GmbH (Emden) and HDW. In joining forces to build the ships, the shipyards formed Working Group 124 (ARGE 124). The 124 frigate is based on the frigates in class 123 but her functions distinguish her from her predecessors. Whereas the F-123 was designed primarily to combat submarines while protecting convoys and territories, the main function of the new class is to protect military units and provide air defence. A new, fully distributed data processing and guidance system with a real-time database and an integrated communication network for a complex weapon system will be used on a German Navy frigate for the first time. The propulsion system designed by HDW and Renk, which combines a gas turbine with two diesel engines (CODAG), is also new. HDW Board Member Dieter Görlitz described the frigate project as an extraordinarily demanding programme. He said it had required an enormous amount of effort and concentration from everyone involved, both in industry and the authorities, because it is the most technologically advanced programme currently being undertaken by a NATO Navy. He went on to say that this impressive programme also underscores the technical edge that German naval shipyards have over their global counterparts. -------------------- Don't let the trees die in vain: Print before you think!
