Der Anlaß: ZITAT Danish trawler scoops up German sub in its nets </font>
COPENHAGEN : A Danish trawler made a surprise catch when it scooped up a German submarine in its nets, forcing the vessel to rise to the surface, Danish sea rescue officials said. The trawler was fishing in the Skagerrak waters between Norway and Denmark, about 20 nautical miles off the Danish port of Hirtshals, when it made its unusual catch. "But the trawler's nets were not able to withstand (the weight of) this extraordinary catch," a sea rescue duty officer told AFP. "The crew of the trawler was never in danger, they were more scared than anything else. And a German vessel helped the captured submarine to disentangle itself and continue on its route," he said. The German sub was taking part in NATO manoeuvres in the region, "Blue Game 2004" featuring 70 vessels from 16 countries. This is not the first time a Danish fishing boat has had a close encounter with a submarine in the region. In March 1984, three crewmen were killed when their trawler was pulled to the bottom by a German submarine caught in its nets. |

QUOTE Canadian submarine in distress off Irish coast: British navy 8 minutes ago Canada -AFP LONDON (AFP) - A Canadian submarine sent a distress signal Tuesday from the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland, the British navy said, adding that a military rescue operation was under way. A helicopter left the Royal Air Force's Prestwick base in Scotland, and a Nimrod long-range sea patrol plane was being dispatched to the Chicoutimi submarine, located 100 nautical miles (180 kilometers) northwest of Ireland, the navy spokesman told AFP. "We are responding and assisting," he said, without elaborating on the non-nuclear-powered submarine's problem. The BBC reported that there had been a fire aboard, and cited other reports that three crew members were suffering from smoke inhalation. In Ireland, the marine ministry said it had been asked by British authorities to prepare a refueling facility for possible use. The Chicoutimi, an Upholder Class diesel-electric-propelled submarine, is one of four which were built for the British Royal Navy in the 1980s, then sold in refitted form in 2000 to Canada. ...Upholder sorgt mal wieder für Schlagzeilen.
