Der Anlaß: ZITAT Danish trawler scoops up German sub in its nets </font>
COPENHAGEN : A Danish trawler made a surprise catch when it scooped up a German submarine in its nets, forcing the vessel to rise to the surface, Danish sea rescue officials said. The trawler was fishing in the Skagerrak waters between Norway and Denmark, about 20 nautical miles off the Danish port of Hirtshals, when it made its unusual catch. "But the trawler's nets were not able to withstand (the weight of) this extraordinary catch," a sea rescue duty officer told AFP. "The crew of the trawler was never in danger, they were more scared than anything else. And a German vessel helped the captured submarine to disentangle itself and continue on its route," he said. The German sub was taking part in NATO manoeuvres in the region, "Blue Game 2004" featuring 70 vessels from 16 countries. This is not the first time a Danish fishing boat has had a close encounter with a submarine in the region. In March 1984, three crewmen were killed when their trawler was pulled to the bottom by a German submarine caught in its nets. |

QUOTE BERLIN --- The Budget and Defence committees of the German Bundestag on June 30, 2004 authorized the following procurement projects:
-- Mungo: initial production batch of 388 vehicles for the protected transport of divisional special operations units, valued at 66 million euros; -- Standard Missile 2 (SM-2) Block IIIA for the long-range air-defense of F124-class frigates; -- Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) for the medium-range air defense of F-123 and F-124 class frigates. The Mungo vehicle has increased protection against mines and bombs, as well as optional self-defense weapons. Starting from 2005, these light, cross-country vehicles will make a significant contribution to the protection of our soldiers. Mungo can be transported, along with an operational group of paratroopers (10 soldiers, with their equipment) by a C160 Transall transport aircraft, as well as by the German army’s CH 53 transport helicopter. Prime contractor of this program, with an order value of 66 millions, is Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), Munich, with Multicar Spezialfahrzeuge GmbH, based in Waltershausen (Thüringia) as subcontractor and manufacturer of the chassis. The Mungo contract secures approx. 140 jobs at KMW and approx. 50 jobs at Multicar. It also allows KMW to develop its specialized technical and competitive ability in the promising area of the light, protected vehicles. The Standard Missile 2 (SM-2) Block III A and Evolved Seasparrow Missile (ESSM) missiles are necessary for the air defense of the navy’s frigates. With both systems, frigates will be able to effectively protect themselves, as well as other ships and army and air force units deployed in proximity to the coast, from air attacks. Both frigate classes, which are assigned to the reaction force of the German Federal Armed Forces, will be used predominantly in cooperation with own forces as well as with units of allied nations. Within the Atlantic Alliance these units will form in the future an important German contribution for the maritime component of NATO Response Force (NRF). The procurement is accomplished in economically favourable conditions in the context of international co-operation, with the USA and other European partners. German industry is taking part in the development and manufacturing of the missiles. The order value amounts to a total of 364 million euros and covers the navy’s requirements with 78 SM-2s and 265 ESSMs. -------------------- Don't let the trees die in vain: Print before you think!
