India demands $10 million from British military firm


New Delhi: India is asking British military firm BAE Systems to pay millions of dollars for the troubles it faced in assembling jet trainers bought from the firm.

In its demand for compensation, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) cites the difficulties faced in assembling the Hawk advanced jet trainers (AJT) which were bought for the Indian Air Force (IAF). Under the original contract of 2004, 42 of these single-engine aircraft were to be assembled by HAL and 24 to be delivered directly by BAE.

Several tools and equipment supplied by the British military firm had to be “reworked”, said a HAL source. “We faced plenty of problems with the entire programme” that delayed the assembling of the aircraft, the source added. The defence PSU had to “re-tool and re-design” many of the equipment supplied by BAE and there were issues with spare parts too which created trouble for HAL.

Because of the “unwanted trouble” that was “not mandated by contractual conditions”, the organisation has now asked BAE to pay it around $10.5 million, a sources said. Negotiations are under way between the supplier’s representatives and HAL officials in Bangalore, the source said.

It is unusual for such a compensation to be sought by an Indian firm in a military contract. The contract with BAE took shape after two decades of negotiations. In a strong signal of its unhappiness with the firm, the IAF had last year issued a fresh tender for another global competition to buy a new batch of 57 advanced jet trainers. Originally, these were also to be bought from BAE.

EADS: USAF can buy 118 A400Ms with savings from C-130, C-5 retirements

EADS North America has offered a plan for the US Air Force to purchase 118 Airbus A400Ms using savings from retiring most Lockheed Martin C-130Hs and all C-5As.

The EADS proposal was submitted last year to the Air Mobility Command (AMC) upon their request, says Neil F. Smith, director of A400M programme for EADS NA.

The concept proposes to stand-up about eight squadrons of A400Ms within the US mobility force structure, Smith says. "We get a very good reception" at AMC, Smith says.

EADS has been seeking to introduce the A400M in the US market for several years, arguing that the increasing size of ground vehicles has out-grown the box size of Lockheed's C-130. The A400M features a 3.96m (13ft) cabin diameter, versus the C-130 family's 2.74m-wide cargo bay.

The size difference would allow the army to load an armoured Stryker vehicle on the A400M, Smith says.

In response, a Lockheed executive challenged EADS' assumptions about the cost of the A400M, especially with the programme currently in negotiations with European governments over a reportedly $7 billion cost overrun.

"I think that's the ultimate in fuzzy math," says Jim Grant, Lockheed vice president of business development for air mobility and special operations programmes.

Despite the ongoing uncertainty about the programme's financing, EADS plans to continue making a big push in the US market. One of the programme's test aircraft could even travel to the US in early 2011 for a marketing tour, the company says.

EADS NA also believes it will need to partner with a major US prime contractor to be successful with the A400M proposal. The company has already partnered with Northrop to offer the KC-45 tanker and with Lockheed with the AS645 helicopter. EADS also would even consider partnering with Boeing to bring the A400M into the US market, Smith says.

Another concept under review is to bring the Europrop consortium's TP400 engine manufacturing into the US market, as well. Smith noted that Rolls-Royce, a member of the Europrop consortium, has established an engine manufacturing plant in Richmond, Virginia, with extra capacity. That production facility could be used as a domestic source for TP400 production.

AgustaWestland wird sich möglicherweise erneut mit dem US101 beteiligen, da man die massiven Kostenüberschreitungen (zuletzt 13 Mrd USD für 23 Maschinen), die zur Einstellung des damaligen Vorhabens führten, in Gänze dem US-Beschaffungswesen anlastet.

Israel stellt Riesendrohne mit Reichweite bis Iran in Dienst


TEL AVIV, 22. Februar (RIA Novosti). Die israelische Luftwaffe hat eine riesige Drohne in Dienst gestellt. Das unbemannte Flugzeug kann 24 Stunden lang in der Luft bleiben und eine Tonne Nutzlast tragen.

Das teilte das israelische Militär mit. Die Drohne „Eitan" hat eine Flügelspannweite von 26 Metern, vergleichbar mit einer Passagier-Boeing 737. Sie kann in 12.000 Meter Höhe steigen und problemlos den iranischen Luftraum erreichen.

Die neue Drohne aus Produktion des Flugzeugherstellers Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) kennzeichne einen "technologischen Durchbruch" und erhöhe die Schlagkraft der Luftwaffe, hieß es in einer Erklärung der Armee.

Obwohl die Drohne formell erst am Sonntag bei der Luftwaffe den Dienst antrat, waren mehrere Exemplare bei der Offensive im Gaza-Streifen vor einem Jahr erprobt worden. Binnen einem Jahr soll eine ganze Staffel mit den „Eitans" ausgestattet werden.

Nur zur Einordnung: Diese "Riesendrohne" laeuft auch unter dem Titel Heron II aka Heron TP und liegt hinsichtlich Groesse und Faehigkeiten ungefaehr gleichauf mit MQ-9 Reaper (letzterer allerdings mit deutlich hoeherer Waffenlast). Ich frage mich, wie RIAN dann den Global Hawk charakterisieren wuerde..."Megadrohne"?

Aircrew numbers in the Russian air force are to be cut by 40% as part of a program that will see the service adopt a revised operational-command structure by year-end.

Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin, the air force chief, unveiled the far-reaching plan last summer with the aim of transforming his service into an agile force capable of dealing with more diverse types of threats. Zelin says the new structure will consist of operational commands, air force bases and aerospace defense brigades (to counter aircraft and missile threats).

Eigentlich nicht. Anderes Antriebskonzept und anderes Flugprofil. Nur der jetzige Versuchsflug ist vielleicht einigermassen mit der Idee von Saenger vergleichbar, dient aber nur zur Erprobung einiger Aspekte der Avionik etc.

Amuesant uebrigens der Spiegelartikel. Im Prinzip zusammengesetzt aus der Meldung von Danger Room und Wikipedia. Es gehoert wirklich nichts mehr dazu, Journalist zu sein.

Vor allem nicht in der Sicherheitspolitik. Die Technik macht so rasante Fortschritte und die Informationskanäle scheinen mir in Deutschland so schlecht genutzt zu werden, dass es nicht verwundert, was rauskommt. Ich nehme noch immer an, dass keiner aus der deutschsprachigen Presse hier liest und auch die (wenigen) anderen dt. Boards, so sie noch existieren, dürften ungenutzt bleiben. Ob MilitaryPhotos.Net genutzt wird, weiß ich nicht, aber mich wundert da nix mehr.
