"It all started when some of our soldiers - a Daghestani, an Azerbaijani and an Adygean - said that 'this is not our war' and tried to write reports saying that they did not want to serve anymore. Lieutenant Colonel Lapin, when he found out about it through his company commander, gathered everybody together and began to say that "this is a holy war". Everything was happening in the morning near the parade-ground, where formation takes place, where the national anthem is sung. A conflict began, they started pushing, including several people from my company.
In response, Tajiks told Lapin that a holy war is a war between Muslims and infidels. Lapin said that "Allah must be a coward if he doesn't allow you to fight for the country you swore an oath to." I personally think that's what hurt the most, the phrase that "Allah is weak." That phrase shocked a lot of people, from those who were standing there on the parade-ground. Because there are Muslims among our officers, both Bashkirs and Tatars.
After the formation, the Russians and Muslims continued the conflict, after which everyone dispersed and sort of calmed down. And an hour and a half later, around lunch time, we were all sent together to the firing ranges, and three Tajiks, who were on contract service, they brought their automatic rifles, they had live ammunition, and shot our commander, Lieutenant Colonel Lapin, he died on the spot. And they started shooting indiscriminately. At the firing range there were both contract servicemen and mobilized servicemen.
There were 29 people killed, whom I saw only. Lieutenant Colonel Lapin was the 30th. That does not count two Tajiks, together with them there were 32 killed. I don't know exactly how many wounded, some of them were taken by helicopters to Belgorod already, some of them are in Valuiki with me now."
